Boots have finally given up - replacements?

If you need crampons get a walking boot that can be used for stalking not a stalking boot to be used on serious hills.

Im still using a pair of scarpas several decades old. Hanwag are decent as are (in this price range) meindl and lowa.

I like my altbergs but I wouldnt use them on a scottish hill in winter.

Meindl for me, I’ve a pair of Harkila which are still watertight after four seasons pheasant beating and stalking and walking- but the second band of stitching on the rubber toe rand is just perusing away..

I have a pair of the Borneo Pro with memory foam, but I had a pair of these about twenty years ago- when I was doing fairly serious winter hill walking in the beacons ( don’t laugh, the north slope of Cribbin in a blizzard is no laughing matter)…. You can fit crampons on these…a cool £350 in my size!

Not these.

Purchased second hand but basically brand new, Didn't look like they had been worn. Appears they have stuck them together with the glue off envelopes.

This is what I use on the open hill and steep rough ground. They really give lots of protection and stability and the ability to kick a step in soft or even hard ground and snow I find invaluable.

They do however take some breaking in and getting used to, especially if they haven’t been worn for a while.

Plus one for not harkila boots ever…unless you like trash
thats your opinion, i have two pairs of meindls fantastic, but i have and still wear a pair harkila gtx boots, i bought nearly 7 years ago, they have never let me down no leaks, so comfy and warm, well these trashy boots work for me, so for £90 seven years good service, i think ive done ok with these trashy boots bs.

Scarpa m3 for proper mountain wear, that being said i did a chamois hunt in my Altberg gamekeepers and felt completely safe.
Like the OP i like to try and buy british and I've had a few pairs of alters and always really rated them.

Viking Hunter High gtx, not always available but they seem to be atm on amazon. Not cheap but amazing quality, I've had a pair almost ten years now. Customer service is great too. I emailed about some new laces, less than a week later a brand new pair specific to the model arrived free of charge.!

Also worth a look is the brandcosse range. Dimmie boots made in Italy sold here in the UK by a small family run business, I have their fagiano boots, absolutely brilliant, I must say.!

If neither of those take your fancy look at the Aku grizzly. Aku again are Italian and right at the top of their game, massive range of hiking boots but only a small selection when it comes to hunting

Another Meindl guy - also have three pairs. I use them primarily because the wide fit suits my hobbit-like feet! Never had anything to compalin about quality-wise.

I cannot recommend Altberg in any way.

I stupidly, despite having been warned, took in my excellent 4-season Scarpas to be re-soled, and at the same time ordered a custom fitted pair of motorbike boots, at a high price.

They ruined my Scarpas (the model above the Mantas), glued on (badly) some completely rubbish "commando soles" which literally were smooth after a seven day hut-hut in the Pyrenees. Carros de Foc. They refused any responsibility, so I did what I sh0uld have done, and sent them to the official Scarpa repairer. Who sadly said that Altberg had destroyed them by grinding off the original Vibram sole, together with some internal shock absorbing parts, only stopping when they hit the steel shank, also cutting away some important internal stitching holding the upper to the lower. And charged me more than the correct repairer would have. Ruined, loads of life left in them, just needed new soles, after probably six months of hard use over five years, in the Pyrenees, Alps and Dolomites, on hard rock.

The motorbike boots were totally wrong, despite their so-called measuring and bespoke manufacture. Far too tight, narrow, toes stubbed inside. Tried to fob me off with some wafer-thin insoles (even the standard insoles were of the cheapest nastiest "quality") No good, still couldn't even get my feet into except wearing the thinnest socks..Then couldn't pull them off again without assistance. So left them to be stretched on a last in some sort of pressure cooker that they have for that, they wanted them for at least two weeks, couldn't give me a date, "they'll be ready when they are ready, no if you want us to post them back to you that'll cost you £25". So, a month later I dropped in to collect them. No they had done nothing. Took them a while to find them too. Told them that I'd be passing by again in a weeks time and they had better be ready. Dropped in as agreed, they were exactly the same, no evidence to me of any stretching having occurred. Asked for my money back, no chance. Stupidly hadn't used a credit card. Gave them to my GF who they sort of fit with two pairs of thick socks, when on the back of my bike. These are bike boots, so not necessarily for doing much walking in. However the Alpinestars that I bought afterwards are pretty good for that.

FWIW they don't make their off the shelf boots in Richmond. That is outsourced somewhere else. Supposedly the bespoke fitted boots are still made in Richmond by hand, but I saw no evidence of that with my bike boots. Nor any actual boot making going on. Frankly I think Timpsons could have done a better job trying to re-sole my old Scarpas.

Currently using an excellent pair of Zamberlan 4 season boots, and a new set of Anatom Q3 Braeriach hill walking boots, which, early days yet, I'm impressed with. They aren't particularly expensive and ISTM better made, and thought through, than some of the other choices. Made for Anatom somewhere, I think in Italy, but so far (I only got them in November) I'm impressed. They a good stiff hill/mountain walking boot, full leather construction, good ankle support, and definitely waterproof.

Worth a look anyway. Anatom Q3 Braeriach Boot | Review - Outdoors Magic

I have been unhappy with Altberg got a pair of Mallerstangs within in a week one 2 of the D rings broke had to wait weeks and weeks for the repair.Wore them for quite awhile then again 3 more D rings broke. So sent them off to be resoled done an average job and they put a wide rand around the boot it looks like they have glued in on with big lumps of glue here and there and the rand is lumpy.Charged me £85 got them back 2 weeks later 2 more D rings broke so complained had to send them back cost me.And they charged a £10 for fixing them. This time they used solid D rings not the crap hollow ones they used in the past. They use to make quality boots but I believe quality has gone down hill.

I have a pair of altberg boots. They’re a fantastic fit for me. I can’t tell I have them on. I really like wearing them. They’ve never been, in any way shape or form, waterproof. Always had wet feet in them.

Well I'm finished with
Meindl, I will never own another pair after they out sourced their manufacturing to China.
I have just purchased a pair of Scarpa GRAND DRU GTX.
they are fantastic
