500 NE Drilling

Was that built by Hambrusch in Ferlach, Austria. When I visited them in 2019 they were building a number of large bore drillings, doubles and falling blocks. I recall being shown the action for a 700 NE drilling. It was just going through the first stages of being shaped - it was huge.

Well boy's if you went there and to see the guns in person you would find they are all a work of art.
And the sheer gunmaking skills from all of the 10 or 12 gunmaker still working in Ferlach are the best in the world.
It takes seven years as an apprentis just to lern standard skills in gunmaking, and to pass there final exams they have to build a whole gun from scratch.
That was what I was told when I was there in 98.

Still pretty much the situation in 2019, although many of the smaller shops had closed up due to retirement.

Only major change is that the Ferlach gunsmithing school now require two guns to be built. One by hand using all the traditional techniques and the other by modern CAD design and CNC machining with all the programming. The pupils leave with a good grounding in both techniques, but by most of the gunsmiths they are still considered as raw material requiring another few years as apprentices.

And they have a very high level of innovation. The biggest gunsmithing business in Ferlach is a little company called Glock who make the odd handgun or two.
