22lr Subsonic ammo

Has anybody been having issues with Subsonic ammo lately.

The problem I'm having is that roughly 2-3 out of every 10 rounds fired are definitely not Subsonic. It's obviously having a negative effect on accuracy which isn't good when out hunting.

It wasn't an issue a couple of years ago but lately every box of ammo seems to be the same.

I mainly use CCI subs but the rifle isn't too fussy and shoots most Subsonic ammo well.

The rifle is a 16" T1X

I stopped using them early last year, as they were too inconsistent. Zeroing at 55 yds I'd get a nice tight group of 3 or 4, then get a loud crack and an impact as much as an inch high.

Not just me then. CCI subs same occasional loud crack.

I recently bought an old stock box of CCI CB Longs for garden pests and they seemed good/consistent for the first 20 or so whilst zeroing and checking trajectory at 12 and 50 yards...but then I missed the squirrel I was aiming at two days ago at 40 paces :( but I would like to blame the ammo!

I was having terrible issues with Winchester subs for a while. Almost all of the batch I had were supersonic. Latest batch seems to be much better though

This is an age old problem. Some batches seem to worse than others and it affects a multitude of brands.

The problems are 2-fold really ... The speed if sound is not a constant. For instance, different levels of humidity will affect it one way or another as will other factors.
Manufacturers seem to like to keep their 'Sub-sonic' ammo running pretty close to the lower variable of the speed of sound for maximum performance. The tiniest variation in loading will pop the bullet out faster than Mach 1. (Speak to any home-loader to find out how even the tiniest variations in load affect ballistics ;) )

So ... we have non perfect loads operating at close to Mach 1 for the best part, but high humidity and small variations in loading will lead to some of that ammo producing super-sonic bullets.

It wouldn't happen in a perfect world, but since when did we live in one of those ?

After a couple of mags shooting RWS subs and then trying CCI it’s literally like picking up a centerfire.
To be fair CCI grouped fine through my CZ but I cant be having them going off on one of my permission, like wise with Eley subs, all over the place.
RWS are a touch slower but don’t seem to have the crackers the other lots do at the min.

Just as longstrider says, it's a common issue.
The manufacturers try to get close to mach1 so no one complains they are to slow and loopy compared to the next brand. It is inevitable that with the tiny charges involved .1 of a grain or less extra is going to cause a velocity increase beyond mach1.
I've never particularly understood the fascination to use subbies. The rabbits being hit still make alot of noise!
I've used hv and subbies on rabbits and I prefer hv. And hv 22 ammo is nothing to get excited about, it's only 1200fps plus. Anything rimfire under 1800fps is humdrum.

I still have 500 rounds of the old Winchester good stuff available and I might be coming up to Wyton in the near future.........

I use the Winchester 42 grain (little boxes) and found them to be excellent in my rimfires.
My .22s have 16” to 20” barrels and Sak mods my friends 14” barrel with Sak mod made them sound noticeably louder.
I too found CCI to be loud and fast

Never noticed super-sonic cracks with eley but I have with both CCI and Winchester. I needed to top up my allowance before sending the FAC in for a One-for-One variation, knowing a long wait is possible, so I have gone for RWS this time. Comments and reviews suggest this is the best choice.

The cci’s are relatively loud and fast in a bolt gun, better in a semi auto. My cz511 loves them. I think the rws subs take some beating for quietness and they’re consistent and accurate as well.

I use the cb longs, they’re useful if your rifle likes them. Many rifles hate them and they’re all over the place, but they’re quite accurate in my anschutz and extremely quiet. They run at about 35ft lbs in the 14 inch barrel. The cci subs, I only use in a semi auto and haven’t had any crackers in that. Probably because the action takes a bit of the speed out of them?

Have you tried the CCI Quiets? I gather they are similar speed to the CBLongs which the RFD said were no longer being imported.
