Moderator/FAC slot question

Hi all,

I have a slot for a .204 Ruger and .204 sound mod, but having done some research my understanding is that second hand .204 guns don’t always come with a .20-cal specific mod. I understand that I can’t have, say, a .22 cal mod… however, one or two brands seem to list both .22 and .204 on the side of the mod itself (I believe Stalon is one of these).

I’m sure the answer is yes, but I just want to double check it’d be legal if I were to buy a mod like that?!

By the way, I realise that in terms of noise attenuation a .20-cal dedicated mod would be preferable due to the smaller exit hole… may not have the luxury of choosing that at the mo though.

Many thanks,

Ben

You'll be fine acquiring and using a .223 mod for your .204' for the very same reason as you describe. There aren't so many 'dedicated' .20 calibre mods out there..

Up here in Scotland it just stipulates full bore sound moderator on my FAC which makes more sense rather than stipulating per calibre.

He won’t be able to acquire a ..223 mod as he has a ‘slot’ for a 204 moderator.

My FAC just says RF mod and CF mod. No calibre specified.

"12.79 Sound moderators should be assigned a calibre, but it is good practice to permit them to be used with more than one calibre of firearm. It is a matter for the individual shooter, subject to the “good reason” test, to decide whether to use a moderator on more than one suitable firearm or to have individual moderators for each firearm."

My ASE moderator is actually a .223 moderator, but is entered against my .204.

I actually have another .223 moderator against my .223.

The RFD will simply enter .204 moderator against his .204 acquisition, even though the moderator will be upto .223. It can be done, and has been done many times.

All mine are assigned.
1x22, 1 x 22-250, 1x 243 and 1x 308.
Different P Force, different interp?
Cheers,Ken.

It would be a lot more straightforward if "May be used with sound moderator" was listed with each appropriate rifle.

Exactly this^^^
I bought a mod advertised as "up to 30cal" from this site, had it sent to my rfd, who entered it on my ticket as 243. At my last renewal I had it re-entered as 270 (even though my 270 rifle isn't screwcut) because I wanted to free up the 243 mod slot.

It my be a different police force and different interpretation. I.E the wrong one it’s not up for interpretation. Moderators can and should be usable across any rifle they are suitable for.

If your licensing department suggest otherwise, point them in the direction of the guidelines. The admin staff who fill in your certificate will likely add whatever you send in. Make- full bore /small bore and serial number is all they require. If no number make and full of small bore is enough.

Guidelines are guidelines.
Two weeks ago when discussing a variation app. I’d sent in, I was asked about my 243 moderator and told them I didn’t have one, but did have a 6mm one.
Was told, ‘I have it up on the screen in front of me. 1 x .243 moderator’, that’s our records, so that’s what you have.
Pointless trying to discuss sound moderators with none shooting people, imo.
Ken.

That’s just one on a very long list.
