Haggarts of Aberfeldy.

Went in today in the passing and i was shocked at the display on show. Half the shop is shut now and you should see the unsellable stuff they have on show. I have lost 3 stone and my four tweed patterns are now discontinued and they don't fancy helping with altering my plus 4's as it may be "too much work". Once supplier to most shooting estates and royalty but now much in demise.

That is a shame. I had a shooting suit from Haggart's some twenty plus years ago and also, even then, got the impression that things were going downhill.

That they can't alter your "breeks" is quite poor. I guess that like me you have need of an adjustment in the waist area? Although with me I've put on three stone!

If it's "too much work" it basically speaks volumes of an attitude of not wanting to assist a customer in need of help.

Thank you for posting this as it saves others from going there to also be rebuffed.

Try scottishtweeds.co.uk a cracking company in Lairg. They too supply many of the estates. I have bought from them several times and always a first class service.
They may have the tweed your after also.

I have looked at many other tailors but i personally reckon they are not as hard wearing as the Aberfeldy firm. All the royals shoot with Haggarts clothes and i think that is a tradition that is going to come to an end soon.

Yes Haggart's seem to have gone down hill,like you say, Jackets were being made down south, hats and caps somewhere else last suit I had made by them hat ready about six weeks after rest of suit, some of the estates getting suits made in Auchterarder don't know how good they will be.
I had shooting suit made by the Tailor in Friar street, don't go there terrible fit.

Like you I have an estate tweed but luckily its not a Haggarts design, tweed is made in the borders so can take it anywhere to be made up.

I had my shooting-suit made of Islay tweed by alexander-james.co.uk who are rather surprising situated in Pendlebury.

Try Pam Blackhall in Tarland, she does nearly all the Deeside and Donside Estates, I've had a few suits in the past and they were always good.

Now there's a blast from the past, my father was a keeper on Dinnet estate, and I remember cycling to Tarland to pick up his suit when it was ready, that will be all of fifty years ago.

i use jonh brocklehurst for my tweeds excellant aftersales can not complain, richard mckay is making my beatkeepers tweed this year so will see what like they are.
as for haggarts all there tweeds are made in leeds area found some of the manufacture cards in every pocket of 3 diffrent suits that i had made by them and the cards smelt of curry! if you know what i mean.
john brockle hurst has nearly all the haggerts tweed patterns and he still makes all the tweed suits even john him self still cuts the tweed.

Haggarts used to out source thier jackets and coats from Chrysalis in Leeds but problems arose and hell knows who makes them now... Curry and tweed.

Well I got a pair of breeks sent down from Haggarts last November and to be honest I could not fault the quality. No change that I could see regardless of where they were made. Mind, bit of a con though when you think you are paying for 'made in Scotland'.

My local gun-shop charges over £140 for off the shelf breeks. Haggarts were the same price, made to measure with whatever you specified regarding lining, pockets, pleats, cuffs etc. Still pretty good value for money I think. Shame if they are winding down though...

Ordered mine in August (I think) when in Aberfeldy and the shop was as you say, looking a bit empty. Arrived beginning November. Fully lined (had choice of unlined, half lined or fully lined), full weight tweed. Knitted leg cuffs (my preference although buckles or velcro added no extra cost), 2 hip pockets, single pleat in front, belt loops, fairly long in the leg (which I asked for) for good over-fold. Breeks, plus 2's or 4's all same price, and made to exact spec from list above. £140 plus postage, got the receipt in front of me.

Is the price perhaps dependent on the tweed choice? The tweed I originally wanted was out of stock however, my wife even commented on how smart she thought they were and she never bothers about that sort of thing. Other breeks I have in the house don't even come close for fit or material quality. Having said that, I don't have any previous pairs from Haggarts as a comparison so cannot comment if quality has gone down hill. All I can say is that compared to off the shelf locally, these are in a different league. I really hope they get back on their game again...

To update an old thread.....
the tweed mill was bought and is now operated by Glenlyon Tweed Mill....still in Aberfeldy. They offer to make suits etc, but I have no idea what they are like. There is a website. The front part of the shop is/will be a pizza place(????)....no retail at all now. Crawford is still there, in the back, doing suits/estates, and will be at most of the shows as usual. The place in Tarland is still going. Lots of places using the boy in Lairg .

GOOD NEWS!! Haggarts have been rescued by a new owner. Their tent at the gamefair in Scone stole the show in my opinion..
