Friday Contemplation - Ideal short barreled forrest deer rifle and calibre?

Now that the Roe are currently hiding away and most of my stalking is in forests I am finding my 22" 308 decidedly unhandy for this style of shooting where it may be off hand or sub 60M where speed and stealth are the thing.
On an any budget basis what 16" barrel rifle / calibre would you be thinking about in the 1700 ft-lb range.

I know the season is short and I will be missing it but I am actually enjoying it for what it is.

7mm08 Remington Model 7 KS, 16" barrel and 40" overall length. About 6kg in total weight with scope when loaded with 5+1 rounds.

It has a DPT mod without the stainless baffle and I added a TriggerTech Special trigger.

Has done me proud, accurate out to 200m and will push it further once I have a proper load sorted.

Be aware that short barreled rifles are LOUD!

I like the look of the Browning BLR for such a job. A lever action rifle with detachable mag and straightforward scope mounting... lightweight and fast handling! Comes in some handy calibres too

I am contemplating a black powder muzzle loader for pheasants, doing something lever or novelty is tickling my fancy, this is blatting, finessing ain’t it. 🤠

You could just take the mod & scope off, stick a small red dot sight on & then you might find that your rifle handles like a dream.
