UK Government Launches UK Deer Management Strategy Consultation

They damage farmers crop- he wanted them controlled hard.

Muntjac do enormous damage. But possibly not as much as grey squirrel of which there is no national plan to cull (to my knowledge).
Grants for grey squirrels are available and being talked about as well at the moment

About time someone addressed the issue of educating the general public about this though, and who better to do it than a government department?
Pretty much what I wrote in one of my responses to the consultation, along with the need to tackle the issue of the "demonisation" of firearms in today's society.

Just wondering who will get the job of reading in first instance, take a view then report to next level having ticked box and its final destination, maybe just ticks box they have consulted and later, much later we are told this it what we have decided. Not belittling our efforts to avoid doubt

the issue with venison sales ? Its in the hands of very few people commercially whom have no need to build a business supplying the UK consumer more directly and with a finished product ie Mince , steaks , roasting joints . Those who have jumped through the hoops and worked at this cannot get enough venison
Processing your own is fine if your shooting small stuff, roe, muntjac and cwd and thats it, throw big numbers of herd species in the mix and its not worth the hassle!

Come and deal with a larder full of lowland reds and see how they get on, after skinning the 3/4th animal I guarantee the enthusiasm dwindles a tad and thats before you even pick up a boning knife!

Like a said umpteen times before, i am a qualified butcher and there is a reason i don’t want, need or care about processing my own!

Would need to be a large set up to deal with volume and only possible to deal with on small scale/ cottage industry style ( which is great). Returning from a day on the hill or field having shot, extracted, and done paper work your ready for home. If you have full larder your at it next day to process and whatever to add value, and the cycle goes on.
Leave in larder, game dealer removes, all good, however nice to process and make a shilling if time allows. If shooting numbers on regular basis different game and focus every time, cold wet and tired and probably same tomorrow. That was my take on it and still is.

I can see that on a estate where deer carcasses come in thick and fast as you would soon end up with employing a few guys just skinning and butchering ( removing much of the margin on infrastructure and wages ) However for cottage industry its very profitable and the toughest bit is getting enough in the larder each week . supplying ready meals to meat packs
I am not talking off the top of my head here i actually shoot for both kinds of outfits. The cottage industry is far more sustainable and should be something that is supported .

Fully get it, all for it.

It will flood the market with venison and that will limit the amount shot. then the dealers will stop taking them and the price will drop even further. I see some very tricky times ahead.

If people take that attitude in an area with damage, the deer will be shot out from under them.

I'm the same as you they go straight to the game dealers but there is loads of money available if you had the drive to set up a business selling venison. I'm not saying doing it yourself but not all game dealer owners do it all their self. The problem would soon then be you couldn't shoot enough on your own and by default become a game dealer. Before you say there's no money in it I think the game dealers are making good money or they wouldn't do it.

Consultation meeting at scotch corner in October has listed highland game as a guest speaker, should speak volumes Other casual observation over last thirty years game dealers often go bust for some reason or other so. Must be feast or famine, one who was doing Well making pies, and butchering plus much diversification could at one point not get enough venison and asked no questions and was very popular. Same guy ended up been chased for money from hare and hounds then held a siege before Shooting self.🤔

Completed, concerned with the control of stalkers training [but no clarity given]. Smacks of contractor based tenders, so reducing stalker numbers and eradication of small / medium leases. Biggest concern is the way it was termed with probable creation of a new government dept and shite software, ie more tax payers money wasted. Also, new controls on stalkers may conflict with an already disjointed Police authority approach to FACs. Mmmmm also wonder how they will get more venison sold at a decent price without burying excess carcasses in the ground

Its got nationwide contractors smacked all over it!

Yesterday, the UK Government published a consultation (survey) on issues affecting the future legislation of deer management in the UK. The announcement is here:

I urge all deer stalkers, be they deer managers, recreational stalkers or those professionally involved in deer management operations to respond to the consultation as this may have significant impact upon the future of deer in the UK and will impact upon all of those involved. The short survey (approx 10 minutes - depends upon the length of your responses) can be found here:

Ditto to the above. I would urge anybody who has an interest in deer management to complete the consultation please,we need to make sure that feedback is given from everybody,as we don't want to miss the opportunity.

I’ve put my quids worth in, even minded my P’s and Q’s 😂😂

Couldn’t help pointing out the following under one question:

“There is a very real risk of a Public backlash, that would do nothing for the desire for increased venison sales, if the narrative and actions arising from this DMS are not managed very, very carefully. In short, any Public perception that DEFRA, and by inference the Government of the day, are trying to eradicate ‘Bambi’ and are happy to see deer carcasses strewn across the UK countryside in various states of decomposition can only be counter-productive.”
