So why do you consider it "idiotic" that someone should be appointed to consider ways of addressing the same problem in England?
One idiotic thing is that the role has been scrapped as a result of thoughtless whinging. Another idiotic thing is that some people on here seem to think it's a joking matter.

(As an aside, there used to be a male midwife at Bangor hospital. Totally dedicated, and absolutely brilliant at his job, apparently. Sadly, he took his own life after enduring years of ridicule and spite).

In the (utterly tragic) case of the male midwife you refer to, he was a trained and dedicated medical professional who spent years training and qualifying, and deserved far more respect than he received. In the case of Jason Grant his previous experience is as a fitness instructor

It doesn't require a medical professional to tackle period poverty. It's a social and welfare issue. I should say that a former fitness instructor would be as good a choice as any for the role. Better than most in fact, if he's been coaching women, because he's probably quite used to discussing women's wellbeing in a relaxed and informal way.

Someone needs to spearhead an initiative to combat period poverty, and personally I don't see why it shouldn't be a bloke, although I can kind of understand why the appointment has provoked controversy.

Why? It doesn’t even exist.

It is a sad situation when, in a supposedly wealthy and developed country such as ours, there are teenage girls losing out on their education because they cannot afford period products and are therefore taking time off school every month due to the embarrassment of bleeding without proper sanitary protection.

There aren’t. The entire topic is a confected left-wing campaign. The alleged unaffordable costs cited as the cause of this imaginary poverty have been proven to have been overstated by a factor of 10. The actual costs are entirely insignificant, and the consequences are nothing more than dishonest behaviour by irresponsible teachers and stupid student politics.

Products should be available in public toilets, just as toilet tissues are provided without question, and someone needs to be appointed to make that happen.

just my opinion for what its worth. I think the issue that needs to be tackled is the fact that women/girls shouldnt feel embarrased about being on their period and that school should provide education for this and easy access to supplies. I don't think we need to make this nanny state any worse by showing people they should get free sanitary supplies because they are poor. We dont get free bog roll if were poor this is what benefits are for and sanitary products aren't exactly expensive. As for the missing school bit I think the girls probably weren't very academically driven because whats wrong with improvising with spare clothing/tissue, asking teachers etc etc. Its down to attitude I think.

It's therefore quite patronising that people who aren't short of money, decide that doing something about women not being able to afford pads is "woke".

My local supermarket will give out pads free of charge, no questions asked, so people who can't afford them don't have to suffer for it. Maybe instead they should put up a sign, "Ladies, can't afford pads, man up then".

Aside from people's thoughts on the post of Period Dignity Officer, a man was given the job and because of complaints about him getting the job, he has now lost his new job.
If there was a position of Prostrate Dignity Officer and that job was given to a woman who then lost her job because men complained there would be hell to pay about it, with people screaming about equal rights and discrimination.

There's nothing that makes people appear more ignorant than constantly banging away at the "right versus left" drum in response to every contentious issue. It's like a kind of a default setting on here. I guess that there's simply not enough intelligence (or imagination) to reason beyond that.

I was under the impression that the job involved raising awareness and allocating funding. Silly me.

I believe the figure of £500/year was the figure stated, however this included chocolate, pain killers, underwear and “other items”….

The fact check people reviewed this and found it to be closer to £128/year.

I’m not saying that’s not an issue for some depending on income however the grim reality is that a percentage of the people or their guardians had no idea how to prioritise so other items (such as smart phones, alchohol, branded clothing etc) was put in front of sanitary products.

Of course no one should suffer, and no one should be denied an education due to this however we must also look at the education of people and where priorities lay.

We must realise that education and instilling people with a sense of self belief is sometimes better than a hand out that will never break a cycle.
