I think maybe the original question has been misunderstood, I don’t think anyone needs HD a pistol for stalking per sei , but for HD of any animal in some circumstances they are invaluable and by far the safest tool for the job.
They can be the most humane and safest tool for dispatch but like any tool there will allways be times when they are not.

Fully agree, for most stalkers there is no need …. But, a wounded Sika in thick undergrowth without the ability to manoeuvre a rifle?
Every stalker should know their ground and only take shots that, given a wounding, they can deal with and if not dont take the shot or get the tools for the job.

HD is a completely different world and one where I would never enter with a knife as it is not a safe or humane option when I have better, safer and more appropriate tools for the job, I have been called out and so take the tools, its not like I am in the field with only a rifle and a knife.

You crack on mate 👍

Do as you wish when stalking but don't use that line if called out for HD to represent another organisation it just demonstrates your lack of knowledge, training and experience. I have personally had 2 stalkers taken off the local police HD list for demonstrating their lack of understanding. One of them cut a firefighter who was holding a deer while the stalker/HD operative attempted to cut the deers neck, that was a hell of a court case
That’s hilarious!

You cant educate the stupid 🙈😂😂

Did you read your post?
All it has done is demonstrate your lack of H&S experience, as someone who has worked with the CPS and HSE prosecuting those who have “never experienced such” yet feel they can have a worthwhile opinion based on nothing you may wish to rethink your position given your admitted lack of experience and knowledge 🤣🤣🤣
Ahhh that says it all!

The recognised biggest H&S risk is those who dont realise their stupidity.
The truly dangerous gap is in the knowledge of the person who can not see the gap between their actual knowledge and their self-perceived level of knowledge.

I will be using this thread and your comments at future seminars on health and safety awareness in high risk environments, absolutely gold, thanks 👍

Pleasure to have helped! 😂😂

FYI
A knife is not seen as a safe tool, under H&S hierarchy if you can do it without entering the hazard zone then you do, a knife is too intamate only likely to get you cut.

As for “can be saved”, most of my call outs are as an oncall vet for the police or RSPCA and the only outcome is death and for muntjac it can only be death.
You’ve obviously not quite understood the question.

HD aside this survey is about the people who feel the need to have an HD pistol purely for following up their own animals out stalking. The results quite clearly show that there is not a need for over 95% of the respondents.

Not at all, question understood.
Im commenting on the blurred lines between stalking, HD and pistol haters.
See my posts above that clearly state there may be a limited need depending on marksmanship, ground and quarry, post 139.
At this moment the figure is 89.3% not over 95%

As I say, you’ve not quite understood the question, or possibly more accurately you have but are choosing to answer a different one.

This thread was posted purely because a forum user said that all stalkers have good reason to own a pistol. There is no pistol hating intended in the question, if for example people are following large animals regularly in thick cover, are taking out clients and having to despatch other peoples’ deer regularly, are carrying out roadside HD or a vet then there is absolutely good reason.

If however you stalk mainly roe and muntjac over open pasture with no people around then you don’t have good reason to possess a pistol for HD, just because you own a deer rifle.

As for the statistics, no you are wrong, the question is “who on the forum stalks and has a pistol purely for following up their own deer” therefore those who have responded they carry out other HD can be discounted. I only put that option so people who do own a pistol for HD had an option rather than answering ‘yes’ when they don’t own a pistol purely for their own deer.

Therefore at the time of writing 4 out of 105 respondents to answer the question asked have said yes, purely for their own follow up, meaning 96.2% don’t. Or in other words, the vast majority!

Ah god bless statistics, that's not what the response category states although it may be how it was intended to be read.
"I do but carry out other HD" does not explicitly exclude the responder and can be read as "I do" and supplement this with clarification they carry out other HD in addition to this as I responded. They shouldn't be discounted without further information

No, it really can’t, because of the question asking “purely for following up their own deer” then if you own one for other HD it can never be purely for following up their own deer, the question specifically excludes anyone answering with of the 3rd option!

My "need" was for my deer hence why it was granted, I then also use it for others deer and HD but my reason to own is for my deer.
Therefore they should be included in "yes" to exclude bias as other members may carry out dispatch of clients deer as has been stated in the threads, so not their own deer.

Then they should be included in "yes"
They have one that is also used for other HD therefore by definition it cannot be purely for following up their own deer!!

If the word purely wasn’t included then yes you’d be right, but it is there….

How is that difficult?

You’ve edited this.

The question is very specific, ‘purely for their own deer’. So if they despatch other peoples’ deer again they do not own one purely for their own deer!

As I explained but you haven’t grasped, this is aimed purely at stalkers who have no purpose for a pistol other than following up deer they have shot themselves.

There is no bias in the question it is just specific!

you responded while I was amending the post to clarify the point I was granted one purely for the need to dispatch my own deer,

You’ve edited it twice now!
Yes I did, probably more than twice as my spelling and grammar is appalling but it doesn't change my point that you made an assumption as to why a pistol was granted, my pistol was granted as I had a demonstrable need to own one for the dispatch of my own deer. what else I use it for does not detract from the fact it was granted for purely for following up my own deer.

Sometimes it's better to walk away. Hit a Deer with a hammer, your going to court. RTA smashed up Deer hit it with a hammer because local vets want a fee to come to the scene, your a Good Samaritan. For what it's worth captive bolt no need for any paperwork. It just weighs 3 kilograms.
