I would too

I’ve found that a 9mm rimfire is plenty gun and loud enough for ratting
As a pistol configuration or shotgun? Have to say I’ve found they just bounce off rats. I just want something very printable for when they are literally running around your feet and would load dust shot for when on farm equipment within the drier.

If that a feed drier, hope you using toxic dust shot and not lead 😂.

As a bolt action shotgun it is ok to about thirty feet

Correct.
I would wager the vast majority on here stalk once a month.
There are situations where a HD is required, more so with clients at times. It's all very well people saying you don't need one. They probably never will as they will never be out enough or be in a situation where it's impossible to stand up with a rifle let alone see properly. Leave people who have one to deal with it.
The number of occasions where you actually need a pistol for HD are very few and far between, I had one and I used it a fair bit, but mostly I used it because I had it, not because I needed to.
Offhand I can’t think of a single occasion where I couldn’t have used the knife or the rifle.
A more realistic option, and far easier to carry, would be some reduced charge ammunition for your rifle.
Any handloader should be able to make you a box of whatever you like at about 1.000fps, more than enough for close range dispatch without the excessive energy of a full throttle load.
