Interesting Panorama Programme "The Green Energy Scandal Exposed"

I have to say I'm surprised that is just making headlines in the UK . It's been a very controversial subject out here for some time now . There is a pellet making facility west of me , it does supply a large part of the Alberta market as well as Drax . The difference being , no one here is under the delusion that burning wood pellets is a green solution . We switched , and are in the process of converting our coal fired plants to natural gas . Burning wood to generate electricity isn't efficient , and in this case , is based on a lie . It started out as a good idea , and would have been viable on a smaller scale . Once the government starts throwing billions around in a virtue signalling frenzy , the sharks start circling . As usual , when large amounts of cash are involved , things get sketchy fast . The green movement has made billions of dollars available to anyone who can even remotely claim that they're a green company . To think that this wasn't going to happen is simply naive . Unfortunately , this isn't the only case of " Green " fraud inflicted on the public , which , I might add , is being subsidised with your tax dollars ................ and now they're raising your electrical rates . If I was still in Britain , I would be ****ed off .

I read an BBC article about this programme yesterday, and while everyone always knew that Drax was an environmental sham, what was new was the catalogue of outright lies Drax was telling about the source of its fuel. If I was a shareholder, I'd be after scalps.

I thought the coniferous Taiga forests of the northern hemisphere absorbed more carbon dioxide than all the rain forests of the earth put together. If we're cutting it down to feed power stations so we can charge our electric cars, there you have the green industry in a nutshell.

Michael Moore also did a film about the green energy scandal , it was a shock for many as he's known to be a left winger stateside so he got **** from his own for exposing it ...you can view it on YouTube , it's a brilliant film and exposes the same ol players that are in it for the money and milking it until they can .

How can there be any environmental benifit in using wood pellets produced in North America and brought across on oil burning ships? With all the Ash being cut due to Ash die back surely it makes more sense to burn that? Almost as environmentally unfriendly as avocados 🤦🏼‍♂️

Mrs Swedish and I looked around a property that we were considering buying a couple of years ago. It was clear when we got there that the owner was an expert in claiming green grants. The real icing on the cake for me was when the owner showed us the wood chip boiler that had been installed with a grant but was not running. I asked why the boiler wasn't running and what was supplying heat to the house as it was very warm despite being a cold day. He then took us to a shed that housed a bigger boiler, too big in fact for the site but that had also been installed with a grant he made more money burning chips in that and simply wasting excess heat...madness! The only reason he didn't fire both boilers is that the smaller domestic one was awkward to get to but the bigger commercial boiler could have chips dumped directly in from a truck on the adjacent track.

Wasn't there a scandal involving the Irish government involved with the same thing? Giving out grants willy-nilly to produce bioenergy and the folks that jumped on the bandwagon got paid per KWH and just left the proverbial doors & windows open.

Have a watch of “Planet of the humans” if you get a chance - everyone should watch this to see how much bull crap there is on the so called “green” side….

Now where are all the commenters who think the BBC are biased?

Cheers

Bruce
They'd kept their eyes closed to it for a full decade. There is not really much in that programme which wasn't also the case a decade ago. The BBC serially refuse to properly scrutinise "green" causes, whether it is this, Packham and fellow travellers, a well orchestrated campaign to end grouse shooting, "rewilding", solar farms, fisheries management, biofuels, district heating etc. etc.

The BBC's bias is mainly in what it omits to report, not that what it reports is necessarily factually wrong.

I cannot understand why Drax needs to transport wood pellets almost half way across the world when surely they could be sourced nearer to UK. Also looks very questionable if the burning of wood pellets should be allowed at all. As previously said surely enough ash in this country but if truth is known its far more valuable to the home log burner market.

I do think there was some bias as per BBC current agenda clearly lots of the timber logs were not of lumber standard and there was a mixed varieties of wood. Also as a side issue did anybody notice the complete lack of PPE and dust extraction in the local wood working shop when they interviewed the local wood worked. Saw dust going everywhere, no extraction at all.

Also slight irony that my stockbrokers Isa/PEP talk recommended Drax as a medium risk buy at £6.37 p this summer I suspect there may be a retraction.

I do wonder how Drax can continue to operate it N America pellet operation after such a revealing programme.

I'm not against burning wood on a small scale. I believe in Sweden & Finland when the forestry harvest the timber all the stumps and trimmings go to local power stations that provide power to homes in the region. I could have it wrong but I'm sure I watched something on TV years ago and thought it was a good idea, Thetford forest is full of rows of stumps left to rot.
