Evening folks,

My car has died and I am looking to replace it with a car that will do it all.

Want a reasonable off roader that will double as a family car. Looks smart and will be reliable (did at the landy/disco fan boys)

A Jeep Compass has cropped up local. Wife likes the look of it, does 40mpg and has 4 wheel drive.

Any real world experience??

The Stellantis plant in Melfi , formerly known as SATA [1] (acronym for Società Automobilistica Tecnologie Advanced SpA ), is a production site and an industrial complex of the FCA Italy group , controlled by the multinational Stellantis . It is located in the municipality of Melfi ( PZ ), in the hamlet of San Nicola , in Basilicata .

So a Fiat controlled product in reality as they took over the jeep chrysler mess from Mercedes in 2014.
 
Done a ton of research into this. The old ones, not so reliable. The newer ones seem ok, so anything newer than 2018 should be ok. My Wrangler has been superbly reliable, but American build quality is laughable. Currently waiting on my Compass to come out of build, should be here sometime in December.

Was going to get a Grand Cherokee instead of a Disco a few years back.

Looked around and found loads fully loaded, with warranty left and at decent prices. Was really tempted.

Speaking to a few mates in the trade, Jeep were dogged with electrical faults resulting in people chopping them in before the warranty expired. Maybe better now.

Shame as I do like the look of them.

Safer money would be on an Volvo XC40/60
 
I have had two Cherokees and two Grand Cherokees in the past in the UK. Never had any issues with any of them other than the old straight 6 petrol engine needed a fuel bowser following behind

Jeep is a very popular brand in the Middle East (where I write from today) They are extremely capable off road. (Fuel efficiency is not a consideration here.)

I am not aware of reliability issues one way or the other of the current offerings

The Compass is small

My Wrangler does between 16 and 20 mpg and due to new commitments I need to change it. Wanted to try the hybrid route, but hardly any small SUVs have a 4x4 hybrid, so stayed with Jeep for the Compass. Going from a 3.6 to a 1.3 turbo + washing machine motor is going to be interesting. :)

PS The Compass and Renegades are both now basically a Fiat 500x, stretched and reworked under the skin. Mate works for Fiat, said they have cured a lot of the reliability issues of old, so took a punt.

My CJ7 does 15.5 mpg with a carbureted 4.2 inline 6. Not bad considering the lift/tires and it is brick like in shape. No electronic engine management on this jeep. A friend has a 2005 ish Grand Cherokee and virtualy no issue's and better mpg than me I think 18 or so at 75 MPH.
 
Had an AMC Eagle 4 litre inline in 1993-5 a stonking vehicle it was too, to be honest I miss it it was a well cobbled together Audi Allroad before that designer was even out of kindergarten.
 
Had a Jeep Cherokee 2.7 diesel, same economy as a land rover, but towed better, you could hear the radio and a smother ride, had the auto box overhauled at 76000 miles but it had done some serious heavy towing, sold it toa mate when leaving the uk and it is still going strong.
I noticed one night there was no rear light on the rear left side, changed the bulb no joy, took it in they said there was no wiring to the light ? So much for dealer servicing and pre delivery inspection.

How did it ever work with no wiring? Total bs.
 
We have one a 2010 model done about 45k in it over last 5 yes it gets used for all the 'dirty' work it's economical 40ish average and ultra reliable nothing has ever broken or given up the ghost but a truly horrible vehicle I detest it
Visibility is appalling blind spots everywhere
Steering is 'lively' it wanders on any ruts and bumps on the road , lights are terrible stalk controls defy logic
However it's got a 2l vw engine that's indestructible starts 1st touch of the key hail rain frost or snow
4wd works well on soft ground tyres permitting I've never dared take it on any rough stuff

I am not anti-Jeep. I have an older Grand Cherokee and i really like it. Mercedes Engine and Transmission.

As has been pointed out, a lot of Jeeps are just Fiats in drag.

Parts prices can be eye watering. I needed a Turbo resonator. Mercedes dealer was exactly half price of the Jeep dealer for the identical part. Jeep part even comes in the Mercedes box.

That was practically the only other option, but really not a fan of Toyotas, unfortunately. Also marginally less ground clearance, but what's an inch between friends :)

As for Yorkie's view on parts pricing, my Wrangler is dead cheap on most spares that I have had to buy. Unsure how the Compass will fare, but got to be cheaper than our Touareg!
