You are cherry picking a quote from a blog, by the deer alliance group which is not law.
They're not, check the law.They are !

It's not illegal to use a thermal spotter in Ireland, you just need to apply for a section 42 licence.
It's like saying it's illegal to have a rifle in Ireland, it's not, you just need to apply for a firearms licence.
Are you saying that if I apply for a Sec42 to use a thermal spotter for recreational deer stalking it will be granted ? I’ve had a couple of Sections in high amenity areas, the use of a lamp was granted but NV or thermal specifically prohibited. You are cherry picking a quote from a blog, by the deer alliance group which is not law.

No, a Sec 42 for night shooting. Lamp permitted, thermal/IR prohibitedDid you apply to use a thermal spotter and get refused?
Okeydokey. No, a Sec 42 for night shooting. Lamp permitted, thermal/IR prohibited
What you said was they were illegal to use, that is spreading misinformation. If you click the link you will see the quoted section of the Wildlife act.
"you just need to apply for a section 42 licence." - Is that not what I just said in post #62? You're proving my point.
If you use one with or without a section, good for you by all means, I'm just trying to avoid spreading misinformation. You cant just walk into a shop buy it and go hunting with one.

Using a quote from a blog by the deer alliance is a great way to go about this.
It's not even a grey area, they are not illegal full stop. You can buy them over the counter in Ireland.
More spreading of misinformation, I'm going to bow out of this back and forth now. Not because I feel I'm being ganged up on but I just have better things to be doing.Listen Fair Hill, this isn't a gang up or anything. Just watch out, don't want to be in trouble with the fuzz, us shooting lads have too much at stake, too much to lose. Your point about it being illegal to have a rifle in ireland - I get what you're trying to say but the logic can be applied to the thermals too.
Illegal to have rifle without a license
Illegal to have Thermal without a "licence"/section 42
Whether you use one or not, I don't care in the slightest. I've used a friends one when foxing and they are brilliant but with regard to deer stalking, Garda are just waiting to take guns of lads.
I've edited my post to make it more in line with the discussionMore spreading of misinformation, I'm going to bow out of this back and forth now. Not because I feel I'm being ganged up on but I just have better things to be doing.
I was agreeing with you….So, what are you saying different to me? They were not good shots, don't take them again, common sense. Whoever they were, they always went to the target with me first. A good dog would definitely have made a difference between losing a beast and getting it.

buying things over the counter doesn't necessarily make them legal.
Its a loophole in the law called "invitation to treat". Take a sword for example, not illegal to buy one on the high street, not illegal to have in your house, but you cant walk down the main street with it in your hand. Then its an offensive weapon. Same with your knife you use for the gralloch.
Also, post #62, I said they are illegal unless you have a section....which we are both agreeing on
They are !
You would suspect wrong, my thermal is in pretty much daily use for a good part of the year so I know the strengths and limitations of a TI.Not much good is the pessimistic way of dismissing something that is better than nothing.
What if the wounded or dead deer didn't fall into a dip and just wasn't visible to the naked eye or binoculars, what if the warm blood it had cast just wasn't visible to the naked eye?
Maybe you've never used a thermal spotter, I don't know but if you had I suspect you wouldn't be so dismissive of them. They are an essential tool in this day and age especially if you are guiding people of unknown experience. You can buy a decent used one these days for under a grand, there's no excuse for a professional not to have one.
