Deflection

Actually had a weird reaction myself this weekend. Shot a red stag yesterday morning, standing perfectly broadside 150-170 yards with a .308 150gr. Hit him high behind shoulder for a double lung shot. He ran 20-30 yards stopped and then dropped in his tracks. As I was walking up to him he stood up walked 5 yards and then dropped into a hedge. When I got to him, I noticed the exit wound was actually in the gut area and the exit wound was no bigger than a pencil. Was dumbfounded and didn’t know what had happened, wasn’t looking forward to opening a grollach full of green. Proceeded to open him up, bullet had entered in the right spot, went through both lungs, liver and then out the other side well down the deers abdomen. Stomach, intestines and all the other stomach was fully in tact, no ruptures at all.

Assuming the bullet never expanded for some reason but god knows how it made that deflection but didn’t rupture the gut

Discovered 3 reds In an area we never see them quick ride home for the .243 and on return I was able too get a nice shoulder shot off, I wait for it too tip and It just keeps standing... and standing... and standing.

After a few minutes I close the distance and wrap around so I can take a broadside shot as It could care less about me on it, I take another shot and Its still on its feet for a good amount of time and even when walking up too it Its eyes were closed, and It had a blink reaction so yet another shot into the back of the head too truly end this situation.

on recovery I'm baffled too learn why It shook the first shot off, it completely bounced off the humerus deflecting it into the cavity and out the neck in the opening of the rib-cage where people "stick" deer too bleed, unfortunately for me and the deer whilst the shot hut it hard there wasn't nearly enough blood loss, what Is unfortunate given how close It is too the arteries for the heart. :(
Once Mr Bullet leaves the barrel he is no longer your friend or anyone else's.

True, always a possibility SD - another weird case this one I'll actually grab internal photos of.

Nearside leg being the furthest back I shot on that so exit is a touch back accounting she probably wasn't perfectly broadside but such a miniscule angle if any.
Entrance has four if not five ribs shattered in a row like the bullets almost skiffed down the side of her, it obviously hadn't but I'm having a weird experience with this gun, as mentioned Its not unusual for the .243 but I've never previously had issues with it and the zero is still correct, just unlucky I supose especially for this doe I did nothing wrong and she died no differently than any other, just weird shot abnormality on the carcass.

I did miss a deer directly after shooting this doe, but I do believe that was just my end (I've not missed a deer in near 30 now, so bound too happen)

I had a Remington 700 in 243. It was a stainless model. Probably more the 20 years ago now. It's barrel was rough for a new rifle.
It would turn Hornady 100gn into explosive varmint bullets.
Some roe were literally cut in half sometimes!

It took a while to work out what was going on but one day I shot a squirrel with it and it near disappeared but fortunately it was sat on a stump with a tree just a few feet behind it and bugger me the bullet jacket was stuck in the tree by a long petal.
On examination it dawned on me that the rifling was so deep it was compromising the jacket and thus losing any controlled expansion capability.

I didn't have that rifle for long and replaced it with a howa built Weatherby Vanguard.
The same bullets in that rifle performed perfectly as expected. Recovered bullets were little mushrooms and they stopped exploding vermin and deer alike.

Just saying....

As I said, super weird I wasn't exaggerating that it full on zipped down the side of the doe, exit is normal and can be seen above

The amount of dead lice on this girl was crazy though, thousands! All on the skirt/flank 1000014319.webp
