All well but a salutary reminder.

I’ve long since dropped the classic heart/lung shot on Muntjac & simply whack them in the shoulders as an initial aiming point.

Nothing worse than trying to find an animal that’s in cover using a thermal, especially now everything is springing up cover wise. I even struggled to find a fallow in a rape field the other evening!
The 4 I shot the other evening only 1 was under the chin so whole, the others 1 front leg from the other 3, all loins and haunch's
Dogs get ribs and trimming but not to much.
The scrap pile is way bigger than went in the freezer :tiphat:

Coming from a time of rationing, my family woud scape the last bit of meat off a rabbit's ribs. Therefore I retrieve as much as I can from a personal carcase. In fact a Muntjac shoulder(the best bit) in the slow cooker plus veg is enough for the two of us. I would consider scrapping a Sika shoulder almost Sacriledge. My mother always hammered in "Waste not, want not".
Slow cooked sika shoulder is one of the finest foods there is.

I do it with some dried figs, red wine and an unholy amount of garlic.

being new to stalking can I please ask you:
Is the point of this to aim from an angle where the bullet will shatter the shoulder and continue into the lungs and arteries behind causing a near instant death? Or is the primary point of this aiming site to purely immobilise the animal and then kill it with a follow-up shot? Many thanks

Smashing the shoulders stops running, and then Its obviously a overall vital shot however a high shoulder shot is also a CNS shot Its not an outright instant death however combined with everything else Its an incredibly deadly fast expiring shot with little room too run (usually theres exceptions, obviously)

Right spot, top of pump, quick death, no second shot needed. Max damage two ribs each side, some hydro bruising, end of story. Only need quick reload for nasty or dangerous things.

Do a search for ‘autonomic plexus’ - there is a ‘magic triangle’ in the shoulder more properly known as the hilar area where shot placement causes significant neurological trauma as well fatal damage to heart & lungs. Put the shot there & it drops the deer on the spot.

I favour that placement in situations where head shooting is inappropriate. It just works.

I'm the opposite. I always cycle instantly , and without thinking. That's more than likely due to spending years shooting rabbits with a .22lr , and often having multiple targets.

Agreed but sometimes what your tying off on the front end is already off
Depending what the bullet has done in their

The other great joy to rambling in the brambles looking for muntjac is the lovely sight of green after the "well placed" bullet has sucked the rumen through the exit hole.

I prefer short range head shots a quick oy and they invariably go head up clear of the body look straight at you and stay dead still for a fatal moment.
