Finally a break from the rain

Finally got a break from the rain and a long promised run out for my 2 young lads. First outing in 2026, can't believe that January is gone already.

We got a break from the rain today and after a quick shopping trip with the wife my 2 boys came asking about a run up the hill, the eldest 11 hoping for his second deer and my youngest (9) hoping I'd relent and give him a crack at one so his brother would no longer have one up on him.
Given the lovely evening I quickly made a couple of bacon sandwiches instead of dinner and off we headed. We arrive on the ground in plenty of time and enjoyed a picturesque hike up the hill hoping to get into place before the deer crept down out of the forest.20260131_171853.webp

Once in place we had about 20 minutes before light got a problem but the deer on this ground always only appear at the very last minute.
About 15 minutes passed and we started to see multiple groups of 4 or 5 deer that seemed to refuse to move out of the tree line.
Just as we were about to give it up 4 does and a young nobber appeared outta nowhere about 60 meters away, my eldest wasn't happy with his shot as he found it difficult to make out the reticle so passed the rifle , with order to drop it Dad I happily obliged and a nice wee deer for the fridge .3485.webp
Ive been tjinking about ot for a while but given the nature of the deer on this ground an illuminated reticle might be a necessary purchase.
It's a bankholiday on Monday so if the weather holds ill see if we can get another one in the bag. I like the hunting this time of the year out early and home early.

Thanks, the boys love it and I get a great kick out of bringing them with me and watching their excitement.
We are having Sika heart with our fry in the morning which might just tide them over untill we get some steaks and burgers next week.

Nice one & well done to your eldest for knowing he wasn't up to the shot 👍

Re the illuminated reticle, I’d urge caution with that… when I first started out I used to go up on the downs very early in the morning waiting for the fallow to come back from raiding the cover crops. It was often very dark even in legal shooting time so I decided to buy a scope with an illuminated reticle. Bad move - all that happened was that it put a very small red cross right in the middle of the sight picture which even on lowest setting was so bright that I couldn’t then see past it to the target.

I reverted back to a normal scope but with a heavier reticle (Swarovski 4a mainly but also had a Leupold with a 3/4 mil dot that worked well) that I could see well enough to centre it on the desired spot. Only after buying a Zeiss Diavari 6-24x56 with a #60 reticle have I been able to actually use a scope with an IR - it has a VERY small red dot & brightness can be turned right down so it’s just a pin prick & not so bright as to obscure the target.

Hope my experience of using IRs helps - suggest you see if you can borrow one to try before committing to buying.

Great write up, I know this may be sacrilege but an electronic day-night scope is fantastic for younger and less experienced shots. My three boys, 11, 9, 7, love theirs. I have an Alpex and an ATN X-Sight, alongside proper glass too.

I'm a Swaro tart after dallying through Duralyt(s), Meopta and even one or 2 Hawkes. Both Z6i I have are fantastic LED-wise having a day/night setting at the flick of a switch and you can dial both down to the faintest pin-prick so whilst I'd agree that some scopes do suffer the issues you say, Swaro don't IMHO. Both of mine are second-hand - amongst the best buys I have ever done :thumb:
