CWD tanning

Having just skinned my CWD i shot last week, it came off very well (for me at least!) and before binning it I was wondering if it’s worth tanning it, although with the thickness of their coat is it more difficult than other species and do they suffer more slippage?

To be honest if would probably be used more for padding my van door whilst shooting rabbits out of it than a rug etc, but that’s by the by

Thanks

Im not sure tanning is likely to keep the pins in....but happy to be proved wrong as they are abundant where I shoot. Ive always found them an absolute pain to deal with. I never hang CWD. Skin off asap.

Yeah I suspect they will go everywhere, when I shot it I plucked a big pinch of them out and wasn’t suprised how easily they come away, this was my first (and reasonably likely last) has hung for 6 days and skinned ok, unfortunately I’ve lost a shoulder on it which was hard to tell with how thick the coat is

If you’ve hung it for that long before skinning any deer would slip, if you want to keep a skin you need to get it off fresh and salt straight away. CWD will drop hair at the best of times, I would be binning that without question after a week of hanging

Bugger! Ah well cheers!

I planned on tanning one and boarding it like a fox, There definitely just a deer you look at and don't touch.

People do successfully tan them for mounting? So they must hold the pins too a degree at least.

They do as a shoulder mount fine but that’s not getting touched/say on/walked on/brushed past etc, I bet if I rubbed it hair would fly off or at best snap

God my reindeer sheds enough with walking / sitting on it, CWD would be gone within a day lol

You could turn those skins into leather. Still have to salt them ASAP and get the skin clean, same as the process for tanning with hair on, just remove it later. Make a pair of moccasins for hunting.
Grant.

Im in the same boat, this skin is fresh, shot yesterday.

Is it worth having a go, I took my time to keep the head and ears intact?

Either salt it immediately (like now, if you haven't done so already), or roll it up and put it in the freezer (right now). Tomorrow will be too late. That'll give you time to think about it. Months, even.
I was going to leave it in the conservatory this evening just laid out flat, skin side up as its 0c in there, havent got time to salt it now.

If you haven't got time to salt it now then stick it in the freezer. Be a shame for it to spoil after all the effort you've put in.

I had to sacrifice a few old items in the freezer but its now rolled up tightly in a binbag and been put in.

I kept the skin off my first deer in the freezer for years before I eventually got around to thawing, salting it, and sending it away to be tanned. It's perfect. Hasn't lost any hair at all.

The CWD was shedding a bit, they do that though I suppose.

I'll keep it until the spring or summer when its easier and drier to work on it outdoors.

There's a company that makes do it yourself tanning packages, I think its £60 for everything, It comes with a fleshing knife.
.
Curious does it have a gralloch cut? or was it case cut?
