Game Dealers License

I’ve been stalking for a couple of years now and I’m interested in getting a games dealers license so I can sell to local butchers etc.

Have DSC1, havent done DSC2 yet but am competent in the entire process.

Any advice on what to do / what’s needed to get a license to sell venison would be greatly appreciated.

I think you'd only need a game dealers licence if you're intending to buy in carcasses from other stalkers, for onward sale.
If you're only intending to sell venison from deer that you've shot yourself (or which have been shot under your supervision) you ought to be able to do what you want to do simply by registering as a food business. If you did your DSC1 before April then you'll already have your Large Game Meat Hygiene certificate as part of that.

My DSC1 has large game meat theory. Am I correct in thinking I can give/sell to people privately and can also sell to butchers? Or do I need to set up a formal food business to sell to butchers?

level 2 enables you to butcher the deer up for sale

But can i butcher deer and give it away to mates on DSC1
You don't need DSC1 or DSC2. What you do need is the Large Game Meat Hygiene qualification. This was formerly included in DSC1, and has now been shifted to DSC2, but can also be done as a standalone qualification with other training providers.

You need to register as a food business to sell venison privately or to butchers, or to sell carcasses to a game dealer (AGHE). It's easy enough to do, and costs nothing.

Theres a large game dealer in my area takes deer from anybody. No food business reg and no large game cert. I know two or three taking stuff in regularly.

That's all fine until someone gets pulled up over it. Or someone gets ill.
The game dealer must be fiddling his records, whatever. If he has an EHO inspection they'll expect to see details of every carcass that's come through his hands, including who he bought them from and the "trained hunter" number of the stalker.
I suppose it all depends on what level of risk you're prepared to take. A bit like me carrying a knife at all times - whenever I mention it the doom-mongers on here tell me I'm risking my FAC, but it's a risk I'm prepared to take for the convenience of always having my knife handy, and no-one's pulled me up over it yet.
I wonder if illegal supply of venison also puts one's FAC at risk?

I wonder how many “trained hunters” have been contacted post game dealer drop off/collection by the EHO?

And what’s to prevent a game dealer registering carcasses from non trained hunters by using a known TH number?

No. Just that in the case of the latter it’s not rocket science to circumnavigate such a challenge if so inclined.

Yep, and if the **** then hits the fan as a result of someone getting ill, the dodgy carcass would be traced back to an honest stalker who wasn't responsible for submitting it in the first place.
The only safeguard stalkers have is to tag their carcasses and insist on getting a receipt for them from the dealer, and insist that he completes his records at the time that the carcass is submitted, and then make damn sure that whatever he's written in his book matches 100% what you've written in your cull record. At least then, if he does make dishonest use of your TH number for other carcasses, you've got a paper trail to back up your side of the story if things go pear shaped.

I do everything right at my end but I can honestly say that I have never been asked to show evidence of trained hunter or food business registration to anyone. I have offered it up but people just dismiss it in my experience. As others have said, it’s their lookout if the Shiite hits the fan.

Agreed. Just ordered another role of BDS carcass tags. Not the all copper ones though!

Before any carcass is released get a signature in a book from the buyer with all the details recorded.

Thanks for the advice from a newbie.
