A Rough Estimate of which Calibre is the Most Popular?

As a very rough estimate of which are the most popular calibres in the UK I have just ranked the number of guns of each calibre for sale on gun trader today. I have only listed calibers that have 5 or more guns for sale: I just thought that I would share it?

cherudge I think that you may need a better research method? I would have thought that the most popular calibre by a country mile would have been .22lr followed by say .308/7.62 Both of those calibres are going to outnumber .243 by quite a margin.

The Rimmies are at the bottom.....(1) .22 LR = 873 for sale, which is by far the most.

I did say very rough estimate. I just thought it would be interesting to look at. Took me 10 minutes cutting an pasting the data into excel.

Purdey Dog - you are correct I have a 10 month old baby and have no life. As Bandit has pointed out I was bagging wheat all day for the pheasants and then playing with excel...

Trouble with this scheme is that it doesn't always work because of terminology. 308 and 7.62 Nato etc should surely be joined up? As perhaps 7 x 57 and 275 Rigby, 6.6 x 55 and 6.5 swedish etc.

I don't know if they still do it but years ago Guns & Ammo magazine used to publish a list of the most popular rifle calibres in the U.S. for the previous year. They based their figures on the sale of reloading dies. If memory serves me right .30-06 usually came out top with probably .270 coming second on many occasions but that has probably changed in recent years.

Eight-by: 100% correct. I read the same article and the 30-06 was the most popular. Having worked in large gun shops, I can tell you that in the US it is entirely a regional thing. Vermont deer hunters would probably never go for a 300 Win Mag, but in New Mexico or Wyoming, it would be very popular. It used to frustrate some people when they would bring in, say, a .243 hunting rifle to our New Mexico gun shop as a trade-in and find that we couldn't give them as much for it as we would if it was a 30-06. We just couldn't sell 243s unless they had some collector's value. Were we in Vermont or Pennsylvania where the deer are smaller and the woodlands thick, it would have been a different story.~Muir
