DSC1 Do i need it ?

“how can land ever be safe or unsafe anyhow ? Its the dambed shot taken or not taken every time”
Indeed so, you only have to look at some of the shots taken for example at CWD across “ironing-board flat prairies” off 9-inch bipods and by “respected“ shots to see the truth in this statement. Gives me the willies every time!

No you don’t need DSC1 nor DSC2, but you will then be having to show lots of experience expertise etc etc. Having the pieces of paper simplifies things tremendously.

So for example if you want to take a lease or join a syndicate many will specify DSC2.

Going onto the fit a competent register, again DSC2 or lots of references.

With DSC1 you will gain an awful lot of useful information in a very short space of time. No it doesn’t make you a stalker, but gives you the basics which you can then put into practice.

And once you have gained that practice the DSC2 will demonstrate to others that you are competent and safe in handling a rifle and managing deer.

while Quals and evidence on paper does not make Competence guaranteed, the lack of it most definitely shows lack of commitment ! The process of learning does and should not stop.
Besides the matter of self improvement , things are constantly changing !
Very little is compulsory, which is something i can actually support as the individuals choice . Just don't bitch when you dont get that lease or contract over a guy who made the effort.

Generally some experience is required before they'll consider opening your ticket, but having said that it's not unheard of for a FAC to be open at first grant. I should say that most people start off with a closed ticket, and then request that it be opened after a year or so. But everyone's situation is different: Some folk don't get their FAC opened until renewal. Mine was opened on request after 1 year. My daughter's was open at first grant (she was 14 at the time).
Basically, if you need an open ticket to be able to do what you want to do then ask for it.

After reading this I contacted my FEO as he said that at first renewal they open certs up as a standard. Mine is currently closed but I held a small calibre FAC a decade ago.

Spoke to him today as Im not up for renewal yet and he said that I would need to put a sort of business case together to get it opened.

I mentioned that I have done my DSC1 recently and he stopped what he was saying and just said no problem, send in your cert with a letter saying youve spoken to me and we will get it opened for you.

I dont know what the guidelines are but I'm happy with the result.

Good to here.

Nice when it comes in your favour glad to see a DSC1 helps.
Had my open ticket prior to doing my DSC1 as i had all ready completed a humane dispatch course with BDS.

Held a FAC for over 40 years , studied Deer Management at college, worked as a FC Ranger/ Stalker, managed deer for many years but have not done DSC1/2.
Only stalk recreationally now, realised that someone who has DSC certification is in a much stronger position to me regarding acquiring stalking.
Planning to do DSC this year.
Have no problem in doing it , not arrogant or conceited enough to think I know it all.
knowledge is power
@Covert would you mind revisiting this thread, or perhaps giving the SD members an insight to your experience of DSC1/2 once complete?

A person with your experience will be valued on the course but would be useful to hear your opinion on the level of instruction currently available / whether its worth it and so on.

Thanks

I was against doing my DSC1 as i thought do I really need to waste time and money for some thing I do not need.

But I did it and meet a bunch of great guys on the course DO NOT BE PUT OFF study on line for a few months and practice shooting test.

We can all learn some thing from the course did my course with BASC and Chris Howard in Wadhurst so happy I did this course.

Chris is a good man.

I do think going to a reputable trainer at a place where there are larder facilities and likely a freshly shot deer makes it worthwhile.

To be fair, when I got my first FAC I didn't know the difference between an open and a closed ticket anyway. A FAC was a FAC as far as I was concerned, same as a SGC (which I'd had for years), so I was already shooting on lots of different bits of ground before it was opened, blissfully unaware that I didn't ought to have been.
Getting the ticket opened (having learnt about such things after joining this site) was a mere formality - it didn't alter what I was doing!

VSS Do not think you are the only one when you read some of the messages on this site.
If they can do this with a shotgun why not a rifle my thought only safe time and money may have to limit the calibre .

Tbf

Tbf, most places ive looked at are cleared for 30cal but I've looked at a couple of areas that are very small but have good backstops.

One is a friends woodland that I bet is only cleared for .22 if even cleared at all. They have deer creeping in from neighbouring land and the wood has big banks surrounding it for safe shots.

Just joking

No problem. I'm going to keep looking for a course within a reasonable driving distance from Wetherby. West Yorkshire

Not a problem, DSC1 is around Easter, so will keep you posted.
Having been working through the text and questions for a few weeks when the chance has arisen.
Has been a worthwhile experience so far, surprising how time dulls the memory though.
Some of it if seems to be a tad basic but good foundations are the base of knowledge.
Every days a school day.
