Discussion on the radio yesterday lunchtime about the amount of money spent on the NHS - £199 billion in 2021-22 went to the Department for Health and Social care, of which the majority went to the NHS. This was up from the average of £130 billion per year when Labour was in power, and yet things seem worse which just goes to show what I've said for years, throwing money at the NHS is not going to fix it!!

The issue is too many leaders and too many in the NHS who think they are the boss of everything . Governments can never make a success of anything they control fiscally speaking , why ? because they do not plan to make money ! Lets be fair how many self-made Business owners sit in the commons ? Aiming for break even will always lead to a loss .
Folks talk about America but the fact is Health insurance funds a far better health care system . Ours isnt free btw! its one of the most expensive systems on the planet yet honestly not one of the best.
Want examples of Government in the UK failing ? GPO and the phones BT is now one of the richest firms but it dont give a fig about the UK , its global now ! The Government basically gave them the UK infrastructure to off load it , pretty much like some utility firms given away ....
it dont matter what team is in power Government should not run companies , corporations or anything that should rely on making a profit !
As for Starmers stupid idea of Taxing offshore oil and gas more and giving that cash to us to help us with fuel bills ? Can he stop them rising prices to protect their shareholders ? No!

So, you would rather have a system like the states where insurance premiums are crippling? Most people get their insurance through work, but if they get seriously ill they get fired and oh fukc suddenly they have to pay for their own medical expenses.

The NHS used to be the most efficient health service in the world but it was deliberately starved of capital so US private companies can get their piece of the pie.

If you want your money going to private individuals, crack on, but personally I'd rather see a health service paid for by national insurance as it was originally envisioned.

Well. I had mishap and severed a couple of tendons and had to have surgery which entailed a 5 day wait.
There was NO shortage of staff. They were tripping over each other to ask me stuff and tick off sheets and sheets of paper.
Two guys came along and marked my wrist saying that would be where the blocker would be installed.
In the event, the surgeon actually went in under my armpit. I forgot to mention two other guys came along with their pearls of wisdom and said that my tendons were buggered. That tickled me because that surely is not proper English, was a swear word when I was a kid.
I was told before discharge how to use pain killers and anti inflammatories to make things more comfortable but they were reluctant to provide them because they pay £75.00 per box. So better that I should get my own at my local Boots.
Did I hear that right?

Certainly agree that there is a lack of joined up thinking within the NHS, they seem to be obsessed with Govt. targets & protocols whilst overlooking that their mandate is to provide patient care according to their clinical needs. It looks to be a failure of competent leadership rather than any fault of those providing hands on care.

I have never heard so much rubbish in my life. The NHS has never been efficient.

If you want an example of excellence and efficiency - the German health system far exceeds ours.

Too many fat nurses doing tiktok videos, and too many managers insisting their staff take 6 weeks sick leave on top of annual leave. Fact.

I went into the Cornwall hospital for a knee opp

The nurses told me - with a meaningful stare - don’t let anyone else other than ‘mr Jones’ anywhere near your knee opp

I didn’t get Mr Jones, but 10 minutes after a pre operation interview I told him to f’off

I also took my own advice

Still suffer from knee probs but still here to tell the tail

My advice …

If the service you are offered doesn’t pass the sniff test - scarper !!

The N H S is a lottery - you might not win

Its a dis-jointed and inefficient organisation. My mother went in to hospital last year after a fall and when it came to getting a coherent view on her care plan for discharge, no one person could give me an answer! People always seem to say that the only alternative is a US style approach which is also broken. That simply is not true. According to the WHO the best healthcare system in the world is in France. More money will not fix the NHS there needs to be structural change. If it were a private company it would have ceased to exist long ago. Rant over :)

Symptomatic of all too many government run organisations, sad to say. Dead easy to spend taxpayers funds without much in the way of recourse when the lolly gets squandered.

Apparently the ‘ big dude” is making a major announcement as I write this

Says something when I’m just not interested in what he has to say

The Gov and the Labour alternative are irrelevant to today’s issue

This. It needs root and branch reform. To start with an end to tattoo removal and fertility treatment. The NHS was so that those with illness could be made well or cared for until they got well. Be it illness of the body or illness of the mind. It has become something other than that and whilst their are the usual horror stories of "health tourists" (smoke and mirrors to seek to divert the blame for its failings) that, in cost, is small money compared to tourists in London who use it and don't pay as they are not asked for their health insurance details.

Ok so it does have issues - major ones.
However for me it‘s been my saviour.
Equivalent of 1000 days in hospital over the past 6yrs
At £500/day - yes that’s what it costs.
Plus two fairly hefty operations, numerous fistulas, replacement uriteric stents (required every 6mths for the rest of my life), numerous blood transfusions and probably about 1500 stoma bags (sometimes 4 a day as the bag to body seal failed)

My family would be destitute.

Here’s another issue, with DNA testing you might be identified as being more at risk of certain diseases.
You might not ever need it but your insurance policy will be high because of the possible chance of becoming ill, due to the tests.
Also what about the people with a family history of Huntington’s disease or fairly common kidney failure or MND (RIP Doddie). They’ll be priced right out of existence - literally!

You can go to any supermarket and get a packet of paracetamol for 50p or less, so why does it cost £5 in hospital?
There in lies the problem - bureaucracy pure and simple.
You have to go through certain routes to get things approved and if it’s not an approved list then forget it. Even if it’s the same drug by the same manufacturer but in a different packet.

Currently 8000 children on waiting lists for transitioning.

We should have a free at point of service for A&E, severe public health single events and for life saving healthcare ie cancer treatment.

Getting your tits enlarged - pay for it yourself. There is a finite pot and it does need rationing.

The nurses and 80% of the patients also need rationing. Obesity is a disgrace in the UK.

Interesting …

so, say £1,200 each, multiplied by 70M is £84Bn, gives a saving of £150Bn and better, accountable healthcare

People identifying as a Pineapple and requiring surgery or wanting an extra arm or whatever can pay extra

Every tax payer gets a £5k tax cut

And by not posting union fees nhs Staff are better off and don’t have to strike
