A list of stupid things for a man to do...

Oh, and another way to do this is with a grease gun. Hydraulics being what they are...
That works GREAT for muzzleloaders where you can replace the touch-hole with a Zerk fitting/grease nipple. Not sure how to achieve the same on a breachloader, but I am sure where there is a will there is a way!

I've never understood how folk get in such a mess with a muzzloader.
First off the ball, patched or conical should be thumb start only, I don't know where all this tight loading combos and short starters came from.....and if you dry ball, trickle some powder in the breech and shoot it out. 🤷

Perhaps slugging your bore with a lead slug with a hole in the middle would work better?
@MarinePMI

Never one to ignore hints, tips and advice, just spent ten minutes (freezing) down the shed, drilling holes in my balls. (no sniggering at the back)...😇

Why, when this new 'improved' version of the 'slugging ball' is deployed (along with the inbound brass rod) it can't fail.

Perhaps it is time for me to think about offering 'slugging' as a business, to those less gifted on SD, and take out TRADE Membership?

You did read my comment about starting up a business?
There are easier ways to make fishing weights.
Best of luck with your new venture, but a man with a Land Rover doesn’t really need another hobby.
Just out of curiosity, how much did that Moisin cost and what’s your current investment in it?

There is a STRONG belief here that a very tight fitting ball is necessary, my flintlock absolutely needs the short starter (PRB from the Bess replica didn't though and that was 😊). I should qualify that my flintlock is cheap garbage that just snapped a second mainspring 🙄 it is interesting that the British Army's first issue rifle (P1776) was issued with a small mallet for ball starting, so the idea isn't total 21st century limp wristedness!

@Stalker1962 what are you lubricating the barrel with? I should have probably specified earlier that I use white lithium grease and plenty of it...

Actually, I just had another "brilliant idea", but at this stage you really ought to try out the holey balls you have produced....

I see that - sub-consciously or otherwise - you have chosen to flaunt your “holey balls” against a backdrop of a map of Thailand.

I can’t help but wonder if this thread is about to take a whole new and unexpected turn…..

P.S. Far be it from me - a self-confessed "slugging" neophyte - to pass comment, but might it not have been an idea to perhaps try out one or two of the "holey balls" first, before so enthusiastically taking the drill to all 24 of them?

That way you could have tested to see if the concept was workable and, if not, returned said balls in their original state back to the donor.

Or is trying to re-pack all the lead shavings into the drilled hole what passes for an exciting evening's entertainment these days, chez S62?

Exiting news from the Royal Mail today, regarding the brass rod, (soon to be slugging down the Mosin) from L.A. Metals

Fancy new "Track & Trace" app. and everything.

"Your order has been delivered!"

I dash outside and check. Nothing. Look under the postbox, under the hedges nothing.

I even stand in the street and look up and down it (like that will help) - nothing.

I go back inside and check the fancy app.

I note the proof of delivery.

A photograph of the parcel (it's the long thin one😜), resting against the front door.

Slight issue.

It's not my front door.

FFS.

How hard can it be?

Go online to try and resolve the issue. Top tip - don't ever try and resolve an 'issue' with Royal Mail on line - it is designed to grind you down and for you to give up.

So I went 'old school' (03457 740740) for some nineteen minutes of classical music, regularly interrupted with announcements of how 'busy we are' and how 'patient and kind (not making this up!)' I am' for waiting....

Eventually speak to a human. They will try and resolve the issue, and hope to do so within the next ten days.

Well that's alright then.

Not in any hurry to start banging lead down the rifle again anyway...

Sounds more like your barrel needs crowning correctly and the bore lapped.
Make sure the lead balls are not an alloy. Try weighing them.
The next spring you get. Polish it and put in an oven that can go 400c until it turns plum colour, remove and allow to air cool.
Never used a short starter in my life and don't intend to.

I imagine a conversation is taking place somewhere in Englandshire:

“Why on earth have you just bought a length of ‘effin brass rod?”

“Not mine dear, it must be yours”

“Nah, just stick it on eBay and some fool will buy it….”
