Nothing sounds like a V8.

Merlin's are V12's
Yep. what other good sounding engines are there? My choice
Saab 3 cylinder two stroke
Aerial square four
Bentley straight 8 - as in prewar Le Mans
Lotus F1 engines
Merlin V12, two are even better - we have non airworthy Mossie and Lancaster close by that do taxi runs, and BMF not too far away
W16 - unfortunately rather rare and not in my circles.
A bit different a King or Castle at full chat up Hemerdon Bank or on the Somerset levels.
What have I missed?

V8 engines are pretty good sound. But nothing beats - for my ears at least the sound of highly tuned straight six or a V 12. Think racing Jag E Types. Even big straight 6 diesels are good to hear.

For that matter I really do the growl of the little VW 3 cylinder engines. We have a little Polo - basic 1 litre full injected engine. Its like a little terrier and I reckon its quicker than my old Mk2 Golf Gti. And its the basic runaround abd for Miss Heym to learn to drive on.

Flown in the Lancaster 3 times, taken it apart twice

Up until last year I owned a string of BMW M3s, the last two being the 4.0L V8, I can honestly say that I enjoyed every single mile I drove in those. On one occasion I drove to Tuscany, every tunnel we went through I wound the window down. 😁
