Unusual roebuck

This is the head of the first roe I ever shot.

I would say any roe buck with a main tine split at the base of the antlers is unusual. More so if, like yours, additional points then appear on each branch of the main tine. I’ve shot a good few malforms since, but no others with split main tines.

It makes for a head that will always bring back strong memories of the stalk, long after those of regular 6-pointers have faded into nothing.

Glad you posted that one. Its a cracker. The one I posted was my first session taking dad along, so will always be fond memories.

As heads go the roe of mine is really nothing special - the photo makes the undamaged antler look better than it is - but it is the memory that is priceless.

Leaving aside the fact that the head on the animal you shot is clearly special for a whole host of other reasons, I’d far rather shoot an animal like that than a bucketload of medal heads. Heads like that are the ones that you will never forget.

Yes I quite agree. Not to mention that the 12 week old pup (not shown in that pic) set about taking him on! Wired haired pointer for you. Seemed to identify with antlers without having ever seen a deer. Pre-programmed pup 🙂

Do these antlers ever grow to the extent of a u-turn harming the animal? Some of these aren't far of that are they?
There have certainly been photos on this site and elsewhere of malforms with antlers that have penetrated the skull.

I've shot a few malforms in my time, including these two (the original head I posted above is in the middle):
