Wanted: Details of any African outfitter who might have a left-handed rifle for guests to use

A friend of mine visits Africa on an annual basis.

With the growing hassle of taking his own rifle with him he is now on the lookout for an outfitter who might have a suitable rifle that he can use when out there.

The particular challenge is that he is looking for a left-handed rifle.

Does anyone happen to know of a suitable outfitter? It would be plains game, rather than dangerous game.

Absolutely get why your pal has come to that conclusion.

Always the worst part of any trip to Africa.

However, most 'outfitters' rub along together (it's Africa - they have to) and if you give 'your' outfitter sufficient notice (and provided they themselves do not have what you want), they can perhaps source one from a 'neighbouring' outfitter.

On our last trip, we used the camp's .416 and 7mm rifles. They only had about five rounds of (various) 7mm. They sent out to their neighbouring outfitter for help.

One of the camp staff, rode six hours there on a motorbike, and six hours back to collect a box of twenty rounds of 7mm.

Never again will I complain about sourcing ammunition, (primers is of course another issue) in the UK.

My wife and I have been through the same thing. Every outfitter we spoke to that we liked the sound of didn't have a left handed rifle, except one, who sounded amazing, reviews were amazing but was out of our price range. If you PM me, I can send details. He was in Zimbabwe.

We came to the conclusion that the only way was to travel with her left handed rifle, rather than choose a destination based on the camp rifles.

A friend of mine is looking in to getting a permit to keep a rifle on South Africa. I have no idea of the practicalities of this though.

I suspect that it will be easier to find an outfitter with a left handed rifle in South Africa than elsewhere.

Many thanks.

He's approached a few companies already and I, like you, would perhaps have expected some typical African ingenuity on the part of the outfitters. However he's drawn a blank so far, to the point where he's close to giving up on a trip.

Hence I was hoping someone here might have some experience of an outfitter with access to something suitably "sinister".

Might be worth a post on the African Hunting Forum.

It is such an ask with so many parts and try to get them in one location...
I shoot a right hand rifle but left handed. You could find a cracking out fitter but no LH rifle then the other way around.
Then it could well have a smartie tube for a scope.

Yes it will be out there but what hay stack and what needle.

Just a thought - if your friend visits the same place every year or has somewhere he really likes, would it work for him to pay his PH to acquire a rifle for your friend to use? Would probably be cheaper in the long run and I know of someone who has done exactly that, although it is on the understanding that the rifle is used as a camp rifle.

I realise this is probably easier said than done.

I suspect he may just get one in SA. V low possible Namibia. With sufficient notice. In the “best” areas in Moz. Bots. Zam. No chance. Just my opinion What’s so hard taking your own? So far 24 flawless trips to 4 S African countries

Hi,
I’ve seen your thread and just dropped Chris the PH we went with a quick message. His reply was

I’m sure I can make a plan. Don’t have one myself but should be able to get ahold of one.

Now when we went with him, he never failed to deliver on his plans … and we threw him a few curve balls. He is a genuinely honest and nice guy. He also has some stunning Kudu on his ranch if that floats your boat.
His company is called CT Safaris and is run by Chris Troskie with his wife Sabina who is an awesome cook and hostess 😋

The great thing about his outfit is that they only take one group in at a time so you are guaranteed individual attention. No chance of being cooped up with a load of overbearing folk set on bragging around the campfire!! We had a trip of a lifetime with them hunting and touring and were looked after amazingly well. Nothing was too much trouble and we had a group that was split between hunters and non hunters. We weren’t after trophies at all but had great hunts for a buffalo cow, kudu cow, 2 warthogs and a mountain reedbuck. I would go back tomorrow and hunt with Chris again if I could.
Hope this helps

This is excellent - thank you

Just back from Namibia after 12 days. We brought our own rifles. Import took 25 minutes for 3 of us. The cops at the airport stored them while we toured up to Etosha to view the park and over to Henties Bay for some beach fishing for shark. Picked the rifles up on our return to the airport and hunted for a week . Nice lodge for 3 days and marvellous game. Then a tented camp for a further 3 days hunting.
Bring Your own rifle that you have confidence in to Namibia.IMG_2314.jpegIMG_2325.jpegIMG_2352.jpegIMG_2366.jpegIMG_2377.jpeg
Cleared the guns for export in less than 5 minutes.
