Roe deer's hide as a throw?

Hi, everyone,
I read here that deer hide is not great as a rug people walk on. However, what about using it as a rug to lie on or a throw? Thinking what I should do with the roe deer hide, feel disrespectful to simply bin it, but do not know how to use ...
I sent one roe deer hide to a tannery, will keep it anyway, but do not know what I should do with this one
Won't do it myself as I read it takes a lot of effort, plus I need to buy the tanning kit

I found my reindeer skin to be pretty comfortable to lie with however roe deer certainly do have a more course coat probably not ideal to lie on, Throw probably depends if you like the feeling of it or not I suppose!
Like with any deer there hair is brittle and will break however with a roe I suspect its more likely to look like dog hair rather than the issue I faced with my reindeer pelt Large white strands of hair stuck to my clothes.

In my opinion I would get a large winter dog fox, Properly done there's no smell and certainly a much softer coat.
 
I have a muntjac hide that sits over my desk chair that I use pretty much everyday which has been there for about 2/3 years and seems okay. My recent fallow has had my daughter roll around on it as well as us put our feet up on it and again seems okay.

As sol has said I've to got a reindeer which seemed like a good idea at the time, though the amount of hair that comes off is a bit much for the Mrs so that is currently tucked away until we can find a suitable place for it.

I think if wanting to use as a throw the main thing is getting the hide (leather side) soft enough for it to actually work. If doing it yourself for the first time (or third in my case) it might not be exactly how you want it. But sending off to a professional may get it right.

We have a couple of sheep skins that I bought which I have and do use as a throw to good effect

In the meantime, either salt it or freeze it, otherwise the decision to bin it will be made for you.
 
I don't know how true it is but when I first started stalking I was told that you can make a fallow skin rug but the hairs on a roe rug will soon fall out and you will have large bare patches.
Like I said I don't know if this is true or why if it is that the two species should be so different.

I would have thought it would maybe be dependent on winter or summer hides but saying that, my muntjac was taken in October one year and the fallow in November. I do have an October Roe to do as well as a February CWD. the CWD i have the least amount of hope for as hair was coming out just looking at it but still worth a go I think.

Id say just don't put any in "high traffic" areas and then you should probably be okay for the most part
 
Generally don't you find that no matter what time of the years when handling a roe you end up with loose clumps of hair, something not so apparent with fallow?

Ive only ever shot the one so far, I didnt notice a lot of hair slippage when moving or skinning compared to the few fallow / muntjac ive done to be honest but I wasn't looking out for it that much either. When I get it out the freezer to tan it that may be a different story
 
Our reindeer hide is awful the hair pours out of it, we've done roe which tans well and red which gets too brittle, roe is the best, used white tan I think, but it is a bit of a labour of love tbh
 
My youngest son used to sleep with 3 roe skins on his bed. They were done by the Moorlands Tannery in Bridgewater many years ago. Sadly all the skins shed hairs. I think v important to shoot an animal not long after it has fully moulted. Does in late season are already moulting so will never retain hairs very well. I have not had a summer roe skin tanned so unable to comment on such a skin.

A question about tanning - I found only one tannery in the UK, Welsh Organic Tannery, and sent them already 3 hides. They told me on the phone that 2 are ready and they would ship to me soon, but I got no emails. I asked them again by email, but they did not reply. Find it strange. I now got muntjac hide which I want to tan, but wonder if I should send it as I did not receive the other ones yet...

They do a good job, but their turnaround is slow due to sheer volume of work. They've been doing my deer hides for the past few years.
However, I think they're stopping doing deer skins (may have stopped already) due to problems of hair slippage as a result of people not salting them properly before sending. One slipped deer hide will ruin a whole batch of tanning solution due to hair contamination.
 
They mentioned too me over twitter DMS there only accepting deer hides from already established customers now
From what I noticed from our convo there's ever so slight wiggle room for new clients ones that they can reasonably assume wont arrive slipping like folk that have tanned in the past or are a taxidermist hides that havent been on deer for a week etc.

Reindeer and caribou are cousins. I have seen many tanned caribou with hair on and they all shed like crazy. On the wall is best.
 
Got my hides from the Welsh Tannery

I assume I sent hides acquired in a wrong season that they started shading hair? The grey one from from October, the ones with shedded hair are from February and May...

I guess the ones which I can get now are probably the best?
