Mate decided to have a look at his scopes (comparo)

He mailed me this the other day and before ye go on a rant he is a deer hunter first not any sort of scope expert.
Just an owners thoughts.

Sat outside tonight, focused on an 8 inch log on the ground 100m odd away, in the shadows. As the sun went down I swapped between all the scope`s i have handy. In order from worst to best in respect to what would have been better for picking up a deer 5 minutes before darkness

Leupold vx3 2.5-8x36 $610. Started to fade first. It looked a lot darker than the other scopes. I found the plex reticule hard to see clearly and would be hard to shoot a deer in that last 10 minutes.

Leica Visus 2.5-10x42 illum $1000 - this one surprised me. It was better than the Leupold but a bit darker than the others. The posts stood out and the illum helps in the last few minutes but it was certainly more gloomy.

Zeiss 3-12x50 duralyt $700 - I would put this on par with the Leica but for different reason. It was brighter but in the last 5 minutes the reticule was hard to make out due to fine line.

Swarovski z3 3-9x36 $770. Surprised me. Given the size and weight (200g lighter than the Leica and Zeiss's) it was bright and the 4 reticule and thick dark posts meant I could make out a target for a moment longer.

Kahles Helia C 2.5 -10x50 FFP $1000 . Bright. Almost comparable with the diavari. The FFP is nice for thick reticule at 10. At 2.5x your eye is more guided in by the posts than the cross hair.

Zeiss Diavari Victory HT 2.5-10x50 $1000 - by far the clearest, brightest and the last I could see the reticule on to take a shot. There wasn't much between it and the kahles, mainly separated by the different reticule and slightly brighter.

I will **** off the duralyt, put Z3 onto the ruger and the kahles on the sako. That would be a decent and comparable scope on everything in the safe so I can pick up what I feel like on the day. Included prices I paid used, AUD

The only surprise in this is the price of the Zeiss HT. 1000 AUD! That's bloody cheap.

I got a later model for $900 and above mate rang the advertiser while I was buying, he was told "sold" then mate told me how he missed it ....he said I was a **** ha ha

450 pom quid or so?

I’m glad to see that the Z3 performed well as I’ve just bought the same model, I’m very impressed with the image in the day as well as the general small scale and weight of the scope.
