New "Zero Target" at Bisley for the 'long distance' shooter. Creedmoor now welcome...

Back at Bisley today and heading off to the Zero Range, full of confidence now that @disco_ike has educated me about their 'long target'.

As I paid for my slot (I needed the DOPE for 400 yards - and to re-zero windage) I asked the lad behind the jump for a 'spare' target in order that I could take it home and write on all the facts I have learnt about what the markings mean.

"Well you can, but we have just invented a new 'long target'"

"Have you by God?"

Aficionados amongst you, will notice the arrival of the 6.5 Creedmoor to the party.

"Old School" members will note that the weight of the .308 has gone from 144gr and 155gr to 168gr and 175gr.

I have just bought about 300 rounds at 155gr🙄

The idea behind this new target (with your rifle set for 100 yards) and hitting the black, you just read off the required DOPE for your scope and your should "be on paper' at the ranges indicated.

Anyone tried it?

So this is a piece of paper, kind of "rule of thumb" to get you on paper? And there's actual errors e.g. MRAD conversion for 200 dope, plus the dope seems BS as whole (175gr shooting flatter than 140gr).

I would rather calculate my own dope with actual values (bullet, scope height, velocity) and proper ballistic calculator. If you have solid input, the results will be within one click of actual POI (have to use G7 or form factor, and input also accurate weather stats).

Certainly there is a 'typo' for the 6.5 Creedmoor 140gr 200 yard conversation.

It should of course read 1 3/4 MoA = 0.5 m

Well spotted.

For all of the NRAs faults we are lucky to have Bisley camp - some of the best times of my life have been spent there, and long May it continue.

The zero range is invaluable, glad to see they have got some new targets to help get set up 👍🏻

That's interesting. My rifles original manual from the 60s has a chart showing distance, bullet drop and scope setting (BDC turret) so you can plot your own target out like that depending on what distance range you have access to

168 and 175 is almost certainly because thats all they had to sell in the NSC shop...
Also it seems those are more common weights these days.

I'm glad the NRA is seemingly opening up to other kinds of shooters, don't knock the trying. Some of the management are trying to undo decades and possibly generations of (IMO bad) habits which won't serve the NRA today.

I think more zero range targets are a good idea and I think what people have to remember with zero targets is that they are really there to get you within a target frame and hitting the mantlet or bullets over the backstop.

Now, if we could only get them to be more proactive in keeping regional ranges open and available...

Scrummy

It's because Bisley is on Ministry of Defence land there is a requirement for a piece of paper that's checkable ;)
I think my girlfriend can recite all the elevation dopes in a 308/168 from 100 to 800 off the top of her head! When the weather conditions are right I have seen her handle MOA plates at 1100 yards with the same load. I'm slowly getting her into 175's.~Muir

To be fair to them, they have bid for old ranges, but are up against developers with big pockets

The charitable purpose of the UK NRA is to provide a platform for marksmanship to aid defence of the realm. Currently they do so via service meetings, and try to encourage service persons in various disciplines and of course schools/cadets which are an abundant source of future SPs already trained (properly) to shoot. Frankly most cadets after a year or two can whip the average stalker in accuracy.

Once PRS is set up under NRAUK as the governing body, Id expect to see a lot more participation ‘off range’.

There is just a lack of commercial realisation in terms of components and how they could leverage their buying power as per Queensland Rifle Association who are the sole importers of Berger to Australia and far exceed all UK sales, for a country with fewer shooters.

Jesus, it’s not rocket science.
Ahem...

Ballistics is the field of mechanics concerned with the launching, flight behaviour and impact effects of projectiles, especially ranged weapon munitions such as bullets, unguided bombs, rockets or the like; the science or art of designing and accelerating projectiles so as to achieve a desired performance.

Turns out it very much is...

I've just checked my 140gr data and at 1000 yds for my 140 loads I'd be shooting over the target if I used that guide. Mine gives me 10Mils of elevation with the load data input. As a rough guide it might be ok but I wouldn't be using it to check my own loads when I have Strelok Pro. I got around the loss of data files after the cessation of downloads being available by using an old SIM free phone on which I've suspended app updates. I guess that misses the point which is using their specified ammo?
