How could you not like the HMR

A fantastic calibre, as you know SD I’ve always championed the little round and own 2 of them, I’m not sure about all these split cases, as far as I was aware the problem had been rectified, I’ve been using Winchester in the CZ and Hornady in the browning and not had any split for a long time

How noisy compared to .22 subsonic? I’ve never used hmr but the subsonic-ness is so useful rabbit shooting I’ve always been put off replacing the 22

Noisy. Certainly compared to a .22 subsonic! More akin to a centrefire decibels-wise. Depends on how good your moderator is, of course. But shooting short range rabbits always runs the risk of one down, the rest away on their toes. So, rather than replacing a .22, it compliments it by getting the longer range bunnies.

Certainly noisier but more of a whiplash noise rather than a crack simply because of the speed of the tiny round but in my experience it is not the bunny-scarer some say it is. On very many occasions I have shot two and sometimes three bunnies sitting close together - the considerable noise of a head shot can be more disturbing so my preferred aiming point is the neck which also eliminates the leaping around so common with head shots and which probably scares others more than the shot/bullet strike.
Where it really wins is the vastly greater distances you can shoot rabbits from with full confidence in their accuracy and power so the human-scaring aspect is vastly reduced - neck shots at 100yds plus are pretty straightforward

I find it such a versatile round, if I’m asked to clear rabbits around my mates sheep farm I always take it over any other my other rifles because there’s always a chance of something a bit bigger 👍

The cases split like a town in Croatia. But it doesn't affect anything much. So long as you listen out for the duds, if you happen to get one. In goodness knows how many rounds, I haven't had one.
I bought a second hand CZ 455 in 17HMR a few years ago. A look in my spent cases box revealed about 1 in 10 split along the case neck. Then I bought a new barrel and since then the number has dropped to around 1 in 25 or 30. I've therefore concluded that the problem has more to do with the machining of the chamber than problems with ammo manufacture, although its probably a bit of both.

Or the ammo has improved!
