Ear bud electronic ear defenders advice

I'm looking to buy some ear buds, mostly for pigeon and crow shooting. I already have a set of electronic ear defenders but find that sometimes they affect my gun mount. What ear buds do people use and how would you rate them? Also what did they cost and did you get any deals on them as they aren't cheap.

I got a pair of custom made ear plugs from my high street Boots Opticians. I was really surprised to discover they offered this service - as it wasn’t advertised at all. They made a mould of each ear then gave me the choice of a solid plug, a mechanical valve or an electronic valve. I went mechanical valve. In hindsight I wish I had gone for the electronic valve as I believe this allows you to amplify external noise - to compensate for the fact that you are wearing the plugs - while simultaneously protecting your ears against the report of your gun in a way that the mechanical valves obviously cannot. I would have found this useful as I without plugs you can often hear, for instance, the wing beats of an incoming bird that you might miss (in my experience at least) with the plugs in. At the time I had mine made I was told that the mould of each of my ears would be kept so that I could order replacements at a lower cost. The service was excellent and my plugs were ready within a couple of weeks. I think they cost £120 - solid plugs were a little cheaper (maybe £90) and those with electronic valves were more expensive (maybe £200). This was about five or six years ago. But if you have a Boots Opticians near you, it might be worth investigating this as an option. A high street “hearing centre” / audiologist might also offer something similar. The plugs are very comfortable to wear and, to my amazement, I haven’t lost them.

I use CENS digital they are very good, however they do cost a lot of money compared to over ear electronic defenders. I also find the on/off switch is fiddly. Battery life is also quite short.

Purchased my Cens digital about ten years ago at the Game fair think i paid about £360 think they are a lot more now though wish i had got the two stage ones then i could have used them on the game shoots as well but i have been well happy with them

I use my CENS DX1 when I’m using my shotguns. Expensive for what they are but they don’t affect my gun mount. Comfortable to wear for prolonged periods as they are moulded to your ears at point of purchase. Bad points are the batteries last no time at all, the tiny buttons are a pain & they amplify wind noise far more than my peltor sporttacs. Bought mine at the game fair pre Covid, they had some kind of deal on. £350ish rings a bell

CENS for me too. Batteries aren’t an issue for me. The batteries are ridiculously cheap, unlike the CENS electronics

Ear defenders give you the best protection for your ears. In the ear protectors are not enough to stop damage as my tinnitus attest.
If you must have in ear defenders then spend a bit of money, ask them the sound level reduction across the hearing range particularly between 2kHz and 8kHz. The report from a moderated rifle is about 120-130dB. Significant damage can occur above 90dB.

Just looked on the boots website and they are listed... £160 for electronic with custom molded plugs. Not a bad price if they work!

I use IsoTunes Caliber ear buds. Worth a look.

CENS Minos the batteries are cheap enough and will last a couple of days. They are comfortable to wear and with the foam plugs seal well. I have over ear ones too but these are my go to for most of my shooting.

I had a pair of Peltor EP 100.
Had any of the plugs fit ears I would have been happy. But none of them did.
So if ever I want in-ears I will have to go custom made. Pitty.

Cens Minos - the foam inserts seem to fit better than moulded plugs (used to wear moulded on the bikes and I found they can fall out if you are sweating or moving around a lot whereas the foam seem to grip better)
Batteries are cheap and they sometimes have deals on - plus they're considerably less pricey than the moulded sets by cens.

Peltor EEP100's

Plenty of evidence, feedback, opinions etc etc on the search facility.

Cheers

I've just ordered myself a pair of these following my recent thread asking about them.. Optimistic that they'll be considerably better than my current custom moulded "filter" types, which are very comfortable and attenuate shots, etc. very well, but do restrict normal hearing somewhat.
Less than half the price of CENS electronics.
