How could you not like the HMR

I bought my HMR in 2010. Run it on Winchester Supremes from day on and never had any ammo issues. A few split necks after firing but never seemed to make the slightest difference to accuracy. Can't recall a single squib. In fact I've had more no-fires from .22 ammo (Winchester subs).

Hornady ammo actually group slightly tighter from my rifle but one round in every magazine would be a flyer - and a proper one, as in about three inches out. Whether they were down to necks split before firing I don't know. Never checked but I've stuck with the fractionally looser but more consistent Winchesters ever since.

My only issue with the cartridge is it's finicky cleaning requirements. It's an extremely dirty round and can be a drama queen without a very strict cleaning ritual.

I’ve never cleaned mine (apart from a wipe over with an oily rag) since I bought it. It’s had close to 2k rounds through it and it’s still putting them into a thumbnail.

Different rifles, different regimes. Mine needs cleaning every 200 rounds. You can set your watch by the groups going from a bunch of grapes to two inches if it's neglected. I finish with patches of meths so it's absolutely spotless and then it will back on the nail immediately with no change of zero and no shooting in.

Whilst it would be better to have a rod handy, I generally have a couple lengths of thick strimmer line bouncing around in my shooting stuff for pushing bore snake weight down a dirty barrel. Can also check for a blockage if you don't have a rod handy.

Had one when the rabbits were thick on the ground. Having reduced them to a few isolated spots I have more fun with my Hornet home loads even though it's unmoderated. Wouldn't bother again, if too many I'd go back to subs .22 RF.

Well I used mine Friday evening for a rabbit clearing job and had no issues from pre inspected ammo.
When I got home I pre inspected some more ammo and dropped them in the ammo pouch.
Can't stand them lousy noisy plastic boxes anyway.
I shot rabbits from 30yards to 130 yards from stationary position off sticks.
I love the little round 🥰

Back out with mine, in total we shot 38 rabbits.

A notable moment was when I took 6 rabbits in quick succession as fast as I could cycle the bolt at 80-90 yrds and they all just stood still not knowing how to react, then I hear my mate with the .22lr next to me pick off a runner at 70 odd yards by the report of the 40g HP connecting with the rabbits head, 7 rabbits in less than a minute!

Excellent and yes the noise thing with 22's and subbies having an advantage is often over hyped.
A sonic crack is near impossible to detect where it came from so they know not where to run where as to them a subbie draws a straight line to the source of danger.
I was 30yds from the residence of the landowner. They never heard a thing they said.

Thanks, certainly agree they have no idea where the noise is coming from and hence dont know how to react.

Similar to yourself I was shooting on one of my small permissions that has several houses next to it and at first I was dubious about running the HMR in that field but it was absolutely fine.

I love the caliber and how effective it has been for me since getting it.

If I had to keep.one rimfire it would be the HMR.

From what I am reading on this thread, it looks like .17HMR is the new 6.5 mm Creedmoor!

It's very similar to 65CM except it's like 65CM sprinkled with Holy Water.

However, if you prefer the dark side and want a 17 rimfire that's charmed with voodoo mojo magic that turns fox's lights off at 125m+ then it's 17WSM.

My advice, use both.
