THE PRETEND KEEPER

Early start this morning on Father's Day, up at 3am and on ground by 3.30.
Started off spotting a doe which has a limp but shes getting about OK , second time I've seen her.
Skirting along the edge of the wood I glassed the unmistakable foxy red coat of a roe in the next field which was very tall grass ...on closer inspection I identified it as a young buck.
After a decent stalk I was around 80 yards of him oblivious to my presence.

Spent the rest of the morning watching the lapwings and Curlews and hares ..lovely to be out 😁

Well, 4th night lucky on the chicken killer, I changed my approach this evening, I went to see the lad at the farm next door to see if I could have access to the back of the farm which he was kind enough to allow me, so now I was able to approach from the rear ( Ooow missus ) no calling, just waiting to see if it came onto a track at the rear of the property and sure enough at around 9:30 out it came approximately 180 yards down the track making it way towards me, after 50 yards it looked like it was going to slip through the hedge where I would lose the shot, so I gave it a quiet “Oi” and it turned to look at me just long enough for me to send a 90gr SP from the .243 straight into its laughing gear, happy chicken man 👍View attachment 314166
Pleasing result, like da stick true wicker man style👍

Still prefer the lamp to be honest , quick and simple 👍
But the thermal will have its uses in certain situations 😁
Yep, the lamp still very good and always so.
Shot a couple cubs this morning/ last night and hardly a breath of wind after the witching hour bet dawn was good, watched a young buck through thermal got to about fifteen yards before following hedge away from me🙂

I like your posts it seems we are of the same ilk.
I have been using the lamp for 40 years and still love it.
The thermal was just an itch I had to scratch as a particular piece if ground we shoot no lamping is allowed.
Also it will be handy on other sensitive bits of ground 😁

Thanks, likewise but I will be culled before much longer, far better to burn out than fade away..😂

Crop protection this evening with the HMR.
18 bunnies accounted for 😁
Lovely still evening watching red kite , barn owl and loads of oystercatcher determined to ruin my stalk on rabbits which they succeeded in doing so a couple of times.

Well, I still haven’t got much work done up at the shoot yet but popped up this afternoon to fill the drinking butts over the far side ( piggeries ) as I’ve got a few young in the edge of the crop, while over there I checked the camera for foxes, no foxes ( a couple of humbug’s) but 43 short videos of deer, always the case here when they are not in season, I also managed to drop strawberry patch raider at the farm so it’s death was not in vain as that’s now become fox bait, I just need the crops off now so I can have a bit of a clear up before the birds arrive 👍IMG_7522.webpIMG_7521.webpIMG_7525.webpIMG_7517.webpIMG_7519.webp
