Wanted: Wanted, Chippy in Surrey

Hi, without entering into a discussion on the whys and wherefores, I'd like a wooden box made for the storage of my reloading powder.

Anyone know a chippy/joiner in the Gatwick area that might be able to oblige?

Happy to barter with a couple of Kg's of N160 :-). Not looking for Chippendale quality, recycled ply is fine. Just want the FEO on-side when I apply for a 375 or 416 Cheytac. Bucket list includes 2 miles, on a shooting and fishing trip to the USA.

I can’t see how a wooden powder store will get an feo onside for a long range sniper calibre. If anything it will look a bit heath robinson. Why not spend £50 on a footlocker size cabinet and lock the powder up in there?

All becomes clear with a little googling... https://reloading.org.uk/explosiveguide.pdf
The document is from 2007, The new regs (https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/l150.pdf) still list the 18mm / 6mm design as shown below.

Storing Nitro-cellulose based powders. Nitro-cellulose propellants are usually hazard type 3. No separation distance applies for stores of powder less than 25kg*. A home loader does not need to comply with the ACoP paragraphs 410 -420 i.e. does not have to store nitro-cellulose propellants in a partitioned wooden box so long as he is storing LESS than 25Kg.* However your premises must be registered with the police for storage of nitro powder over 5 kg as per the amounts listed below in sections 10 & 11.

In effect, up to 5KG no license, no box, over 25kg needs both, bit unsure about when the box is needed on new regs.

Forgive my ignorance but why would a cheap plywood box make keeping power more safe? Obviously keeping it in a sealed box has its own problems. Why not just keep it in the original tub and spread them out so there 1ft apart?

I would go more with nasty than cheap, even I the grandson of a chippy could have that together in about 30 minutes and mine would have rebates and dovetails and more.

They want it to resit 8 minutes of fire before cooking off "Boxes constructed in line with the findings presented in HSE research reportRR9916 can be used for the storage of between 1 and 25 (5 x 5) containers without being type tested. They are expected to provide at least eight minutes of fire protection to a box that is involved in a major conflagration."

Unless its a gun powder or a propellent you need explosive license to procure/ store, you don't need a ply box. Reloading powders can be stored in a cupboad or shelf, just fine. Doubt if FEO would care much about how you store the powders and for larger calibers, as long as you have a reason, they would agree to it. It has nothing to do with how you store your reloading powder in my view.

That bit didn't go quite so well did it
As i feared! bottom line, I need somewhere to store my powder, I don't want to p**s off my FEO, and in the grand scheme of things the cost is trivial compared to the cost of my rifles and Shotguns so why not.
