The weather

Eh?
Not idea what you mean. I have been into heavy metal since I was 12.

And is that your response when you get proven wrong?

Come on, I thought you were better than that.
Just trying to fathom why your posts on the weather far out strip you stalking post as I thought you were better than that 🤫

Nah, I’m an all knowing arrogant arse, according to Finch!

I simply spent my time at uni studying it so kind of understand the science quite well.

It’s also good fun winding up luddites!!

Thought a Uni edcatuation would be in the forefront at some point....
What’s wrong with going to uni.
After all your doctor went to uni, as did the person who designed your car, and the person who designed your house, and likely your bank manager!

Bloody uni grads - what do they know!

Still, I have a great job as a result so can’t complain.

You don't wind anyone up pal. You're just repetitive and tedious. And now we can add smug and self-satisfied to that as well. You've posted nothing on weather or climate that any fool couldn't have found in the first entry on page one of a google search and when no one bows to your wisdom you imagine we'll all be impressed that you went to university and have a nice job. If you can't see how that looks, maybe you should have spent a little more time at the university of life and learned some self-awareness.

@TringSaint you never answered the question, was the warmest summer in the Aberdeen area in 1864 caused by global warming ?
No idea. There are one offs where you can get extreme weather but they are just that - one offs.

Climate change is more about trends, so looking at average temperature and rainfall, etc.

We are seeing lots of upward trends at the mo and they show, over a number of decades, that the climate is moving in a direction and each year it moves faster.

What will the outcome be? 🤷‍♂️

I have clearly touched a nerve @Finch
Was simply having a robust debate but clearly on this one we need to agree to disagree.

Actually you don't understand it at all, you use randomly assembled words from what might be Wikipedia to form doom cult chants. They don't even rhyme.

I was reading recently that the SEI, an environmental pressure group, had funding and was now editing key wikipedia pages relating to climate to ensure they properly reflect the one big truth of the cult. The purpose is to further stifle any hint of scientific debate - you aren't interested in any form of robust debate but simply in shouting down anyone that states the obvious physical reality that contradicts the past and future predictions of your cult. If anything you believed were true then the world would have ended many times over the last 50 years, it hasn't, there's no physical evidence that it will. Based upon the physical evidence you need to revise your world view.

Fwiw my views aren’t just based on Wikipedia.

As I mentioned above, I did a 3 year degree in this subject and worked for a year in the dept for environment working on domestic energy consumption and lifetime co2 emissions from houses, and I spent another two years working for an energy management consultancy specialising in the carbon footprint of commercial operations. So I’m not just copy and pasting from the internet as I have some real world experience in this field (not that that will have any bearing on your opinion of me or my views).

Anyhow, I’m not going to agree with you and you aren’t going to agree with me, so rather than getting personal and petty, let’s just call it a day on this one, yes?

Well, among other things you've already called me a moron so suddenly deciding you don't want to get personal seems a bit of a strange turn in events. Fundamentally you are paid to chant physical untruths to further the agenda of denying development to poor people in, in particular, Sub-Saharan Africa while lining the pockets of a few rich people. You never see a scientist on your TV telling you to believe in the latest rebranding of the cult - it is always some rich bloke in a suit - that's because this isn't a physical truth but rather what amounts to a criminal act.

As you can see myself, and many others on this forum, have no intention of letting you engage in your doom-cult activities without calling you out for it. It is possible that what you are doing will come to be recognised as a crime as, in due course, the rich and powerful move on to their next scam. This is the least of the reasons for the general public to limit the spread of lies by people in an "energy management consultancy specialising in the carbon footprint of commercial operations" but it is important that we distance ourselves from what is going on. There is also a very basic issue of simply pointing out physical reality. I appreciate that for many we live in a "post truth" society where physical reality has no meaning and, in fact, is to be opposed for various societal reasons. The world can not progress on the basis of a made up "reality" where Planck and Lindzen can be ignored in favour of a narrative that is untrue but appeals to the politics of Thatcher or the need for attention for some middle class virtue signaller.

A crime, really!
You are funny!

Another "hot water" subject, but I have got a big toe. The planet is a marvelous thing, and its very good at evolving over huge periods of time. 10,000 years ago we were in an ice age, for example. The real problem is that directly by our interference with industrialisation we have altered the time span for that change. Nature needs time to adapt. I try to do the right thing. Within the life I lead I try to help the planet, and the people on it, as much as I can. I am sure that if we all do what we can it will make a difference.

Check your facts. 1976 was not as hot as last summer nor as dry. It never got close to 100. Last summer we topped out at 40.2C. An all time high for the UK, but don’t let any real statistics get in the way of your argument!!

Time plays tricks on the mind!!
I don't agree, 1976 was both hotter and drier, we even had a minister for drought.

The uk recorded a max temp of over 40C last year c5C hotter than 1976.

Stats don’t lie.

Actually stats are easily misrepresented.

For example everyone I've ever met in Wales has more than the average number of legs. If I was so inclined I would report that people in Wales are remarkable and unusual because they have more than the average number of legs and I would spin this to appear unusual and to support some agenda I was pursuing.

Of course the truth is that a small number of people have less than 2 legs but I'm not aware of anyone having more than 2. As such everyone I've ever met in Wales does, indeed, have less than the average number of legs but this is perfectly normal and doesn't mean anything other than that I'm misrepresenting a simple arithmetic mean.

As has been previously discussed many UK records, and weather recordings, now take place on relatively newly built airfields with large areas of tarmac, the heat island effect is certainly significant. It is also the case that temperature records are now "corrected." They are almost always (recently) corrected upwards to make them fit with computer modelling of what the temperature should be, the same computer modelling that predicts the warming that isn't actually happening. I do recall one NASA paper (2016 I think, published in Nature as I recall) where they asserted that about 20% of historical temperature records had "missed" the warming and so needed to be corrected upwards by 19%. So the physical reality is being changed to make it appear as if it reflects the chanting of the doom cult.

@timbrayford may well be correct in what he says about 1976 as in 2022 the Met Office changed the Central England Temperature record and "cooled" the years from 1970 up to 2003 quite dramatically while, for some reason, the years since 2003 suddenly became a lot warmer. Someone, when asked to describe Tony Blair, once said that "with Tony the future is certain, it's the past that keeps changing" and that also seems to be the case with the Met Office and the temperature record. You wouldn't imagine that the temperature in 1976 could suddenly change in 2022.

As someone who lived through both summers, the recent peak might have been higher but the length of prolonged heat in '76 was far longer. Make of that what you will. In addition there is no ecaping the fact that urban sprawl has meant that many weather stations have changed from rural or semi rural lcations to being surrounded by hard surfaces and buildings. This will undoubtedly distort the figures. As a scientist I am sure you can accept this point.

David.

PS. I also went to Uni and did Physics.

Isn't it because the Jet Stream is south, instead of up North, pulling in the hot weather from the Equator and Africa, The highest ever recorded temperature was recorded in Death Valley, Nevada in c1915, so you could say it's getting cooler. I thought people went abroad for the hot weather.

I wish it would move it a bit bloody further north. I've had my fire lit most evenings for the last week.

In one respect you are wrong, I never did Uni and spent my 50+ years working life as a bloody good car engineering designer, not I will add as a black suited stylist, they hijacked my work title to look better.
