Steel Scaffold Tower High Seat

Hi All

I have acquired a 6x4 steel scaffold tower similar to the one below..

Potentially it could make a good freestanding covered or open high seat. Has anyone successfully tried the same? Any feedback, practical advice or images would be much appreciated.

We used them a good few years back. Fashioned a hut on the top of it. It did need bracing wires. Main thin is grease the joints heavily if you want to take it down on a regular basis for moving. They can seize up with rust if you don't. J

They will/do wobble and can be tipped over so account for that with guy ropes (steel) some turn buckles and 4 decent fixings. they are smaller in dia so a scaffold clip will not fit v well if you wanted 4 brace legs.
Get the top one right for rail height, I have an middle elbow rest on my big 2 man seat as nothing worse that no dead rest for a miss.

I use one on a free-range chicken unit.
Made up some u bend pegs from rebar that are 300mm long and driven into the ground on each corner.
Ratchet strapped down the boards to help keep it rigid and stop it creaking.
I use an idleback swivel chair on top.
Can move about a bit in the wind, but then shot placement is not crucial for me as long as they go down, not sure I would try deer off one.

Cant use that kind for work now , I sure as heck wouldn't want to trust one as a fixed high seat in field or forest.

yea , still got them, what i did was get some adjustable scaff legs to level it up and then postcrete them in , and that leaves the tower free for moving , and as said a few braces .

Got one on a bit of ground, boarded it out with ply board and old fence panels, robust but certainly does the job. Deffinately need guide wires to tension and stablise.

Guy ropes. Definitely needed. Don’t put it in a field with cows or horses, they will use it to scratch h their arse and then, timbeeeeeeeerrrrrrr. Flipping things.

I also made the seat with an angle so it was comfortable to lean against and the top folded down on a hinge so as to keep the crud off the seat itself.
I made the seat out of scaffold board so it sat on the scaffolding and was movable.

I use one all time with a potato box in the top to conceal wrapped in camo (ex pigeon hide) netting, it works really well.

Encourage vegetation to grow up it but you will need to keep pruning

Never had an issue with wind or instability

I use one and fitted some scaffold boards to lay down on the job, nice and stable, for longer shots. I have ground anchors with ratchet straps for braces (checked each time prior to ascending) with shorter boards under the bottom rungs to prevent sinking into ground with my fat ass on it worked well for last 5+ years

Guide cables are a common theme for stability and greasing the joints is a good tip. I also like the idea of being able to shoot prone or seated. Plenty of options, I am looking forward to getting it setup.

What is the best way to secure and tension the cables to the tower and the ground?

Angle iron pegs and ratchet straps for stability.
If you don't have the sway bracing, you can replace this with ratchet straps opposing each other
For really good camo, especially near conifers, use artificial grass/astro turf cable tied to the frame

If you use Wire then you will need a wire clamp much like an exhaust clamp to make the loops
You drive your stake at an angle away from the tower
Personally I would drill a hole for the turn buckle to save on wire in the stake.
With ratchet straps they are far less technical than wire clamps than turn buckles but easy to have cut or taken.
It is not a radio mast so in the end 4 r straps.
I would not shoot prone as the Idea is for the round to be on a down angle out to what distance you choice.
and shooting prone your field of view is much more limited to sitting up.
People watch to many sniper films of people shooting the bad guy

Tim.243, your comment made me smile. The location will offer shooting in three directions including a possible prone shot up a steeply rising slope. As for sniper films, sure I enjoy them but I have enough shooting experience to know the difference between fact and fiction.

I made a scaffold tower highseat .
I knocked Steel gas pipes into the ground as far as I could , with a sledge hammer , and the tower legs go over the top of them . I also use a small ratchet strap on each corner , to attach to scaffold poles , also knocked into the ground with a sledge hammer . My good lady made me a cover that goes over the top (like a tent ), and it's made from the the material that's used on cutain sides on hgvs , it has four opening windows , and a garden chair .
The main downside , is that as soon as I sit in there , I go to sleep .
