Wanted: .22 Hornet & Mod.

The .224 NTX are amazing… up there with V-Max and Varmageddons for exploding rabbits. I'm sure I've seen our American friends on various forums talking about factory rifles with 1:10's or thereabouts.
Do such things exist over here too? Might be a long wait to drop on one though, especially in a rifle you actually like the look of.

Most 223 are 1-12 but 1-9 was quite popular on the tactical and range guns. Now 1-8 seems to be the way as it will still shoot the 50-55 grain lead that's the normal choice and yet get into heavy for calibre lead and copper .
I am shooting 50 grain ECX copper from Hornady in a 1-12 and it works great .

I have the CZ , the trigger is push forwards to set before taking the shot or std pull . Mine shot well out of the box new 15 years ago , however i bedded is on pillars just to control movement of zero .
Not sure if i have ever missed with it in on quarry tbf in thousands of rounds. Played in my mind about selling but doubt i ever will ! What is not to like about something that takes round about 10-12 grains of powder and has the capacity to take Roe to Rabbits indeed was favoured for it before the deer act , Richard Prior used one for many years and i know others who hunted Reds on the Hill by getting in close and shooting well.
Its ideal for denning Cubs due to its low report with the moderator its not noticably louder than a 22 LR with HV when both are moderated

Should I need to rebarrel one, any recommendations in terms of a gunsmith in the southeast?
re-barrel a 22 hornet ? do you realise how many rounds you can put down them? Your only going to need a new barrel if you buy a rusty crusty one basically . Perhaps if someone did a K hornet conversion real badly ( i have seen this done ) . Realistically its double the round count of a 222 rem at least

And… ..if you go for the rebuild, you can put a faster twist barrel on it. I have a rebarreled CZ527 that came with a 1:12 on it. I recently found it shoots the 35grain Hornady NTX like a storm, so I've got a clear route for when lead vanishes as I know it'll work with longer lead free bullets. Also accurate with 36gr Barnes Varmint Grenades, but those are not going fast enough to be expand as I'd like.
Most Hornets won't stabilise either of these.
Worth a thought.
1-12 you sure about that ?

I had a BSA before thd CZ and it just wouldn't group. There were big sections of missing rifling. I guess it never got cleaned. There's a world of difference between shooting one out and letting the barrel corrode. I guess Triggermortis is taking some risk at auction, although a condition report should identify any serious issues.
If I ever bought another hornet I'd want to see what it could do on paper. The last one was untameable and I still have to fight to find loads that this one likes.
Mine is a K hornet. I shot three rabbits with it last night with cast lead bullets and 1.4grains of powder (subsonic), but at the other end of the scale I had a fox last week at 170yds with a fast 50grain soft point.
They are brilliant once you tame them.

Fancied setting up casting for my Hornet but not sure we have that long left with lead to bother setting up. What is the load you use ?

I have a Merkel Mod 92 and a Combination BRNO (no mod) 22Hornet/12G and scope -PM if interested in either and I'll dig em out

Someone gave me some lead home loads after the owner died about a year ago, thought I’d try ‘em last week.
This the results with a couple of my loads to compare.
They dropped quite a way compare to my loads.
Must be mild ‘cause they sounded almost Squib like.
Aim point was top of those 3 circles at 100 yds.
Ken.

yeah i was into the idea i think red dot was the powder that looked the best for a 40 grain basically going a bit slower than a cci velocitors . However with lead on the way out i have become a big fan of none toxic Copper Even on Numbers of rabbit the other week with the 223rem . All fit for the table and its good practice for deer , all said and done if your hitting rabbits in the head at 200 yards - you aint going to miss a muntjac or Scottish Roe in a hurry
