How do I clean synthetic stocks???

the surfaces of my 2 sako and Ruger synthetic stocks are very sticky and need a good clean in order to get rid of fluff from the inside of the rifle slips. I have tried wiping off with warm soapy water, but this seems to just make the surfaces even stickyer. Is there a way to clean the stocks better?

I know Christian from Spartan Refinishing did a video not long ago refurbishing a synthetic stock... standby I'll try find it see if he showed how, can't remember off the top of my head.

They weren't gun stocks but I had other rubberized items become sticky. Rubbing them off with white spirit did the trick for me.

Have you been wearing Jungle Formula? Even the slightest residue will melt synthetic stocks, I made the mistake of using my ACME dog whistle after applying, even though I thought I had thoroughly cleaned my hands.

It’s not just Jungle Formula, anything with DEET in it.
Sako and other rubberised stocks don’t require that, just use will make them sticky, it’s a major design flaw, Sauer do the same too so it’s not just Sako

Are these stocks that soft touch rubberized texture? I've had other things coated in that before and it goes horrible after a while

As above, the rubberised layer on Sako in particular gets sticky. Mask the rubber panels on the fore end and pistol grip and have at it with a scouring pad. If you don’t like the base colour, find a rattle can you do like the colour of and get busy.IMG_0677.webp
You can get your own dog.

I’ve got a zeiss rangefinder that has been in a draw for a couple of years. It’s done the same thing. Absolutely ridiculous this finish is still being used. It’s not fit for purpose.

The GT85 spray is good on synthetic stocks, I know they can become unsightly but when you consider that they are very grippy - they actually do what they are meant to!

Dear everyone, Minnie tanks for all your feedbacks, I have given all the suggestions more or less a try, but on my bsa air gun stock first, which on balance is eve more horrible than the stalking rifles stocks. Not so expensive if I mess up 😁 OK so far, I have given it a go with white spirit, unfortunately did not make an impression, ditto using WD40, washing in soapy hot water didn’t work either, however, the stuff the chaps who recently fitted PVCu windows and doors in the homestead left me to clean off any missed glue and mastic when they finished the job ( highly recommended firm, AEG windows Hampshire) definitely worked, see image. Only downside is, the fumes this stuff gives off would keep a gaggle of glue sniffing punks high for a week😬😬😬

Usual old git mind problem ommited to send the image🙄🙄

Once again, thank you all very much for your feedback and tips. I have now settled on using the what ever the it is in the bottle of mastic and glue cleaning fluid the double glazing chaps left me. It definitely works well. Albeit the fumes do get up the hooter. So far I have cleaned off the fluff, sticky film and dirt off the air rifle and Ruger. I have also rubbed some silicon grease over the now cleaned stocks, and given them a good old polish. Hopefully this will help to keep them clean and sticky free🤞 I will have an initial try on a small area of the sako finnlight stock before fully committing, just in case the evil cleaner is too strong. I will also buy the recommended stock conditioner above. All a bit of a flaff really 🙄

I have just bought a used Armsan semi auto 12 bore for pigeon shooting - the rubberised coating was awful and looked like a bad case of sunburn. An hour of rubbing it with my thumb took all the coating off (and most of my thumb’s) back to the plastic stock. It now looks great so would recommend same to any others.

Beauty of a wooden stock - after 50 odd years of good hard use, a gentle clean with 0000 wire wool lubricated with fine linseed oil - wipe off any slurry with a kitchen towel. Then rub in a finger tip full of oil and good for another generation. :)
