RIFLE CLEANING

This makes sense. I've always kept my rifle clean from new. After nearly every outing when I've taken a shot. It doesn't seems to matter whether a cold clean bore or a warm 10th shot there all the same for me.

Have you ever had a brand new barrel that you have cleaned properly after every use?
What you describe is commonly seen on ‚pre-damaged‘ (already pitted) barrels.
I‘ve never knowingly bought pre damaged barrels.
Why do competition shooter fire fouling shots?
Ken.

As soon as you buy a used rifle the likelihood of it not having been maintained as it should is 99%. Most of them will require fouling shots after having been cleaned down to bare metal. That's why I never buy a rifle s/h; at least not the barrel that I want to use.
The foulers in competition are nothing but superstition. Especially benchresters are full of it🙄. And even if there is a slight offset it is nothing that you or I would even notice.

Totally depends on how bad and where the damage is . I am cleaning everything back to bare metal , You cannot replicate a state of dirty . What i have personally found when a bore has had its time is if you clean all the copper and carbon etc out it will in general shoot fine for so many shots but then when it gets dirty to a certain point it looses accuracy and it can happen gradual or all in one hit like is hit a wall . I am running one used rifle now , it has a pitting issue ( last user was likely a " next round down cleans it fine " type of guy) . I gave it a super clean and de-coppering so long as i get the last remnants of Blue out of it then it shoots just fine next time. I have had this before on other rifles and my plan with that rifle is carry on doing major clean up after every use till i get no Blue or black on a patch . When that no longer works its a new barrel job because i like it and its better made than most of the Junk the Factories put out today , all full of gimmicks and high marketing spend

Hi. Have you heard of Galvanic Corrosion? It's worth a Google..

I think it might be a bit to late to clean that barrel.

Removing the copper now, after 15 years, is sure to exposed pitting caused by GC.. Exposed pitting will result in bullet deformation.

This is a classic situation that supports the old wife's tail. You'll need a few rounds down to cover the exposed pitting.

Whereas, regularl cleaning, to remove copper, would have prevented Galvanic Corrosion (pitting) in the 1st place.

Good point, the OP needs to move to a more draconian 10 year regular cleaning programme by the sound of it

Just a question regarding the term ”cleaning” after an outing.
Are we talking full on chemicals, bronze brushes, patching out etc or just dry patching out till they come clean thus drying the bore and removing exessive residue?
