45/70 vs 30-30 underlever

The original plan was for it to do both, but after this thread I’m not quite sure!
OK i personally feel its one place where " bring enough gun " applies ! Deer especially muntjac - Roe fabulous ! Big angry dangerous boar , that can open you up well ? Not to sure i would give that a go

Are you using it for Boar though ? Standing just right there on the ground facing the Wild boar ?
Have you?

Personally I'd prefer something I could recover quick from and shoot again thanks to a fast action over a high recoiler and a turn bolt or any bolt that requires the grip hand to leave the grip.
If I had the choice of a turn bolt, a shotgun but no levergun, even in 30-30, I'd pick the shotgun!

I have shot wild boar in both Devon and Romania. Their size and strength is phenomenal. If you do not kill it outright you will have to follow it up in the bush, and risk injury. Have plenty of gun for the job. I personally think the 30/30 is just not quite up to it. Getting a calibre that is better suited may save you a lot of sweat and pain.

I have shot both the 45-70 and the .444
Just my opinion that the .444 is a nicer cartridge to shoot and for the uk and driven boar on the continent. I have noticed over the years lots of people getting and then selling the 45-70 and say it has hardly been used ! Where as the .444 Marin owners tend to say that it would be one of there last rifles the sold .
I’ve also shot both in marlin 1895 and, though there was a bit of time between, I found them pretty similar.

My 45-70 is getting and definitely will continue to get used. The .444 was developed as a modern equivalent of the 45-70, but in a modern action the 45-70 is already modernised.

Each to their own though!

I haven't used these myself , but a younger friend of mine has used these on about 4 ? White Tails , including one very large Buck . They do kill very quickly and have the benefit of less recoil . I will eventually give them a try , but I have about 500 hard cast 405s Gas Checks to go through first lol . I think they'd make a great option for the UK .

I would suggest looking at some Canadian and US sites for further information . The 30/30 has been used extensively on Wild Boar and Feral Pigs for years with good results . To be honest , it isn't the slightest bit controversial on this side of the Atlantic .

The ideal compromise might be 375 Winchester? Especially as it matches pretty much matches the performance of the .375 Flanged Nitro Express (aka the .375 2 1/2" not the .375 Flanged H & H Magnum) and the .375 Flanged NE was considered a good all around double rifle boar and large deer cartridge in its era. I recall seeing one at Westley's when they were still near Birmingham University. That was a Holland and Holland.

You'll find rocking horse poop at a rocking horse conference first my friend! 😞

Surprisingly not. There's a shed load of factory ammunition been through the UK auction houses in the last two years. And the rifles are sometimes seen. Both the early ones and the later Angle Eject variants. None on Guntrader tonight when I just did a search but this did come up though:

Not tried on anything living yet but pushing them at 2100 fps out of my remlin, expanding to .804” and those petals are razor sharp. Nothing is going to walk away from that.

The modern 45-70 is surely the 450 marlin?
It kicks like the proverbial mule though 😂

Hmmm. Now call me old-fashioned but in a situation where my quarry is also “armed”
cac8354b-25e7-494f-b666-13a0a5ff1a37.jpeg
and ”damage” such as

might come my way I would tend to lean towards:-
(a) shooting from a (very) high seat; and
(b) shooting something with a surfeit of stopping power!
