Dumb Thief Tries to Cut Down Tree Stand, Loses Chainsaw to Tree

Conservation officers believe the suspect was attempting to steal a tree stand that was set up on public land in Crow Wing County.

Because the stand was locked to the tree, the suspect used a chainsaw to try and take the whole kit and caboodle. As they cut into the trunk, however, the weight of the falling tree compressed on the bar of their chainsaw, pinching it solidly in place. The suspect was then forced to leave their saw in the tree, where it was eventually found by the hunter who owned the stand.

If the tree-cutting suspect is identified, they’ll likely be charged with attempted theft as well as hunter harassment, which is a misdemeanor in Minnesota punishable by a $375 fine.

Ha, I hope he/she gets caught, they hand out decent punishment in North America.
Ps. I got my brother-in-law's chainsaw stuck just so... cutting some big pines & American oaks down for him in South Carolina.. talk about feeling like a Charlie

Given that it happened on public land in the US it’s more likely that the idea was to remove the other hunter from the area altogether rather than to steal the seat.

Obviously no chainsaw spanner on them, could of just left the bar and chain behind.

Amazing the lengths people will go to , to steal something.

Was going to say the exact same, esp with a stihl it's a doodle to take powered off.

Not so easy with a small husky, bloody external clutch is nothing but a pita.

A handy tip for anyone cutting well away from ur motor/spare saw.
Always carry a plug key and spare bar and chain, have cut a trapped saw out quite a few times over the years and saved a lot of long walks.
