BASC - fighting your corner on firearms

Good to see, would be nice to know the result of the cases, win, loose, which Police force.
Thanks. I will ask how much detail we could share by way of a round-up. I do recall many years ago we used to do a monthly update to members called 'BASC bites" which included firearms case studies without giving too much identifying detail but enough to show the kind of things we had helped members out with.

I for one and I sure many others appreciate your input in here, thanks for keeping us up to date on issues BASC is involved with.

Given some of the rather intemperate posts on your recent threads, just thought I would say so. I never begrudge my membership, if we didn't have BASC then there would just noise that nobody in the blob would even turn an ear towards.

Oooh, 32mins and the haters haven't arrived yet!
Ill be your huckleberry 😂

First of all , well done BASC for highlighting this service, it wasnt immediately apparent , and Im not sure whether its a recent policy change to use the err, '7 figure' fighting fund to help individual members in legal cases, and I commend you for this.
BASC came in for a lot of flak for dropping the legal cover in 2020, I left as a direct result of it , and I still think it was wrong, they should have increased membership to pay for it , and they would have lost less members, but that ship has sailed.

I will say , anyone wishing to make use of the service needs to read its terms very carefully, like with the original legal cover, they will not fight a case unless ...
  • A case that has a likelihood of winning (the previous LEI did not fund cases unlikely to succeed)
  • The member has been the victim of an injustice
'It’s important to note that our decision-making team reserve the right to stop further funding of a case at any point. Any costs incurred by the member will be covered until that point, but it is only right that if circumstances change, we are not spending members’ money on a case that no longer has the prospect of a successful outcome.'

That being said, its a good fall back position, rather than get into an unrecoverable (financially) situation costing members £50,000+
Test cases may be worth this sort of figure, which I believe this implies ?
  • Does the case have wider implications? (while any judgment will be based on that specific case, if there is a point of principle, it can help set the correct tone for other firearms departments on future decision making)

Overall , good effort B+ :D

I am glad that a 'u' turn has been made as it will help some people.
It took a long time to 'turn' the ship and I wonder if asking (consulting) before cancelling the previous policy and re-negotiating it might not have yielded a better service.
That said, I am surprised the fighting fund is being used since a reduced cost legal policy, based on the same criteria as previously but with the extra consideration of 'principle' by BASC Council/delegated to pass the last hurdle.
Shame the fighting fund has not previously been allocated for some specific support and I actually thought it was originally more.
If this is all it takes for members to consider re-joining then I suggest they look at their car insurance/home insurance first.
I have managed for some 50 years without legal support and I am afraid labelling it as a 'comfort blanket' is a poor choice of words.
Nevertheless, let us hope this is a trend towards better service. I am certain the NGA offer a similar fall back but it may only be specialist advice since I have never used it.
I have nothing whatsoever against BASC, excepting poor service and a gradual loss of influence over 'regrettable decisions' that it has made. I fact I have often called for a stronger BASC which I would seek to re-join. I am still waiting.

Well, it took a while, but he finally made it.

CosPlay shop must have been busy…

Some years ago I turned to BASC to advise and assist on a variation that D & C were deliberately sitting on

After 17 weeks (at a time when variations were typically a 14 day turn round), I asked for help from the BASC team

They asked for the details and my written permission to act on my behalf

Within 3 days of their contacting D&C I got my variation

They got a thumbs up from me

What u-turn?
BASC ended legal cover in 2020, 3 years later they have announced they will cover some legal issues themselves, through the fighting fund.
Whilst I didnt use the term u-turn, it is a bit like that, dealing with a highly unpopular decision BASC chose to make, again , without consultation of the membership.
