Oooh, 32mins and the haters haven't arrived yet!
Ill be your huckleberry
First of all , well done BASC for highlighting this service, it wasnt immediately apparent , and Im not sure whether its a recent policy change to use the err, '7 figure' fighting fund to help individual members in legal cases, and I commend you for this.
BASC came in for a lot of flak for dropping the legal cover in 2020, I left as a direct result of it , and I still think it was wrong, they should have increased membership to pay for it , and they would have lost less members, but that ship has sailed.
I will say , anyone wishing to make use of the service needs to read its terms very carefully, like with the original legal cover, they will not fight a case unless ...
- A case that has a likelihood of winning (the previous LEI did not fund cases unlikely to succeed)
- The member has been the victim of an injustice
'It’s important to note that our decision-making team reserve the right to stop further funding of a case at any point. Any costs incurred by the member will be covered until that point, but it is only right that if circumstances change, we are not spending members’ money on a case that no longer has the prospect of a successful outcome.'
That being said, its a good fall back position, rather than get into an unrecoverable (financially) situation costing members £50,000+
Test cases may be worth this sort of figure, which I believe this implies ?
- Does the case have wider implications? (while any judgment will be based on that specific case, if there is a point of principle, it can help set the correct tone for other firearms departments on future decision making)
Overall , good effort B+
