my lab has had a seriously runny backside for 4 days now--eating well enough drinking well but totally loose bowel. vets gave us medicines ,probiotics, but wifes concerned it may be something fatal .I fed him well cooked venison last week --no bones, not masses but reasonable bits here and there for days. im told this can react on occasion and give a dog the runs??????Got some skitter samples we are taking to vet tomorrow but poor hound has serious problem . Any opinions??

Sweet potato or pumpkin, you can buy the latter in tins (unsweetened) are very effective at restoring good bowel movements in dogs. We roast whole bags of sweet potato and add one to each meal when things get messy, but also as above, simplify the diet down to chicken and rice in small quantities as a start

The wife’s terrier gets a real dodgy stomach especially after venison - comes out as it went in, if he bad she put him on this tined feed , they do a hard biscuit feed to, really settles his stomach, also has buscpan occasionally.

Get some of this, it's a clay like substance which is administer orally via syringe, very effective.

My spaniel would get raging squitters if i fave him venison and i gave him goose leftovers which was also too rich. 3-4 days turning himself inside out was not uncommon.

If the suggestions above such as pro-kolin paste, immodium ( proportionate to weight) and plain meals of rice and chicken didnt work i would go to the vet- probably at 4th /5th day. The injection they give always seems to work but you never know for sure whether it would’ve fizzled out anyway, but you can’t watch the dog suffer indefinitely.

Rightly or wrongly if they still eat and, more importantly, drink- and aren't listless or declining then i didnt worry too much as he was a bugger for scoffing myxi bunnies or other unmentionables and it happened a lot when he was young. If an old dog i’d go to the vet sooner as they can go downhill more quickly.

Our lab is raw fed, eats lots of venison but very occasionally develops a loose back end. We use prokolin paste, sweet potato and white fish, cooked & cooled and start with small portions. Keep the cooking water, allow to cool and he loves that too. Normally settles in 2-3 days, if not see your vet.

You can also give dogs Immodium, but it may not be suitable for prolonged diarrhea.
This should be outlawed.. if you have the ***** you have a gut infection.. it needs to come out. My uncle's wife almost died because she did this very thing, her consultant told her Immonium and similar products should be banned...

I disagree.

The sh*ts doesn't mean you have a gut infection.

Immodium can be used for IBS or a whole other range of gut problems.

The consultant is wrong.

My spaniel had a stomach issue, tried all the general ideas.
In the end she was given metrobactin.
This is an antibiotic and it also firmed up the poo.
If your lab has an infection then no matter what you do you might require a visit to the cash makers (vets)
Having recently lost my spaniel it’s worth getting your dog checked out

I used to use Yu-digest for the squitts with the dog which work but since switch her to raw it’s rare she ever gets them.
Try giving him a raw bone to chew on it should dry his bowel up in a day or so. (I’ve had to do this once and it worked)
Having switched mine to raw I’ll never switch back now. She’s awful with all cooked meat but can eat any raw meat. It’s almost like she’s descended from a wolf…
