Wanted: .338 Lapua Magnum Rifle

Hi all,

just testing the waters to see if anyone has a .338 Lap Mag rifle they are thinking of selling. I have the slot already, just not purchased one yet, mainly due to the nicest rifles being very pricey! I would love an AI or Cadex if I could.

Looking for something more financially viable. I have been eyeing up a Savage 110 Precision as it's already in an MDT chassis. Can anyone comment on Savage performance in this calibre?

Thanks

Have you thought this through?

I only ask because I hadn't.

You have also used the phrase "financially viable" in your post - .338 ammunition is about £5/£6 a pop. That is the least of your worries.

Where are you going to shoot a .338? You flag up as London based - you are not allowed to shoot a .338 at Bisley.

You will have some distance to travel to a range that will accommodate this calibre.

If money and travel are not an issue, then knock yourself out.

I had a slot for a .338 and both money and travel are an issue for me. I swapped that slot for another .308 and bought an AI for long-range stuff.

I’ve used a Ruger precision rifle 338, shot very well and well balanced and the weight helps with recoil. Also used an older AI AWSW which shoots as expected.

Do some research on the 110

There is some negative comment on their performance in this cartridge on the Hide - particularly at SH classes where when 338 was popular many turned up with “financially viable” weapons and were disappointed with performance (both instructors nd operators)

I’d also look at any Ruger Precision with an open mind too

Many of the early rifles were problematic with a known issue of barrel and action alignment

This is well documented

Stripped down numerous of them for a pal who had a mass coating job and I personally wouldn’t have them on my list (but choices are yours and every rifle system have their followers )

I have a Barnard model 10 built by dolphin for sale £2600
And also a blaser Tac2 £2500 the tac 2 has a very interesting history and will likely rise in value.
The Barnard is a tac driver, shot it out to 2000m.

Tac 2 history ?

The one I owned had a tale for closed doors

Had a an angled picatinny on the chassis for “attachments”

Having owned several AWSM’s all shot very well, as did my Barret Bravo even though keyboard warriors slated them!
The TRG is probably the best of the cheaper options , had two both shot well,
If you want a boomer because you want a boomer and going to use it infrequently ammunition cost isn’t really an issue,
However if you intend to use it seriously and at its design distances then you need to dig deep!
But for plinking etc a Ruger or the Savage will put a smile on your face,
And leave cash in your pocket
If your fortunate to be well off
Buy a AXMC and a sub calibre barrel conversion,
I’ve just been informed AI will be announcing a new Rifle shortly which will replace the MK 111 which is now no longer available

This particular one has SF history. It shoots well but the Barnard is allot heavier so much nicer to shoot.

Every Dolphin rifle I’ve seen has been staggeringly accurate.
As a consequence, I now own 3 of them!

A savage or Ruger in 338lm are good fun if you want to plink past 1200m but the accuracy will likely really hold you back.

And inside 1200m you might as well get something with less recoil and powder/ ammo cost.

I'd say hold out for a 2nd hand tier one rifle else you'll only end up wanting to upgrade and be stuck with a hard to sell rifle.

RPA or Barnard would be my go to as people spend £4-£5k on them, don't shoot them a whole lot and then sell at half the price.

buy once cry once as it's not an easy calibre to sell on.

I reload, so the cost is sub £2 a pop at the moment!

Lydd will be my main range for this calibre with plans to visit Wales for their longer range shoots. Traveling to Lydd is the same time it takes me for Bisley so no real drama.

Have a .308 RPR already and in the process of building a Tikka based 6.5 Creedmoor for PRS.

If you do buy a 338 use 250 as the weight limit - 300 class kills the 338
Does the 300 burn out the barrel too quickly? I already bought some Lapua 300grn heads unfortunately....

What is your preferred recipe of components?

Thank you for everyone's input! Very useful and great to learn from you all! Have also PM'd Loler UK.

Have a custom 338 in an AI chassis for sale
Low round count
Very accurate
Have shot it personally

Free SL7 and tank brake in with the deal

You need my 338 Lapua Mag if you want a good one. 8-32x56 Nightforce on top.
I think some of the members are confusing 338Winchester with the Lapua..chalk and cheese.

338 LM works best with 250 class projectiles

Much heavier and you lose the benefit of the powder capacity and effectively have a oversized 308

(I’m exaggerating but there’s no benefit to using anything over 250 g)

Unless you use LTS and single feed but that’s another entity altogether

No longer have 338 so load data is irrelevant and only useful in my own rifle really anyway (Whixh was a custom build and used LTS in it from Lutz and later GS Custom predominantly)
