Don't you just love eBay and its members....

Interesting, would you be willing to share which bank you are with? Both of mine (HSBC and BoS) have started to allow cheques to be banked in using their app. App takes a picture of the front and back of the cheque.
Santander has a £500 limit which is not much these days is it?

Just tell them a cheque is fine I’ll post the item once funds have cleared.
Don't go there, the over payment scam is well used, initially the payment clears then 3 months later the bank in bongo bongo land rejects it and your account is deducted accordingly

Not sure what HSBC/BOS limits are to be honest!

Equally, I don't tend to sell anything that pricey 😅 (when I sell anything at all that is!)

Only ever used the cheque scanning to bank in things like refunds from cancelling insurance etc, which only seem to be sent out by cheque...

What really pi55e5 me off is the government can instantly take road tax payments online no problem, yet resort to a postal cheque system with all the inconvenience to the recipient for refunds.
I don't understand why they can't instantly bacs it back.

Because the more inconvient they make the refund process (or any process) the less likely people have the will to get their money back...

Air BB getting bad. We were looking for a place in Central Oxford with parking. Good location and v good price. Looked at pics and they seemed a bit iffy. Carefully read description several properties. Then we went through the reviews and it appears lots of guest found they were in a flat a long way out of Central Oxford. There were 4 flats only one Central and you were not told where you were staying until the last minute. V sneaky.

So there me with trying to sell an old Parker Hale catalogue from 1945 on eBay for £14 plus postage at £5 to cover Recorded Delivery at Large Letter Rate and I get this message...

"I am very interested in the above item. Would you accept a personal cheque in payment? The reason I ask is that I was phished when using Paypal and am therefore very reluctant to use it."

Indeed thinks I. It's a wicked place is eBay. Best to be careful. So I've replied back this...

"Yes I am happy to accept a Postal Order but not a cheque as I too have had issues with cheques."

Let's see what the reply is! Doesn't trust enough to pay me by Paypal but wants me to trust him paying by cheque?

I need a brick wall to bang my head against! Sometimes you get to think that when having a clear out of the attic that you'd be best off just chucking the stuff in the dustbin and saving the aggravation of it all.
You do know lots on SD are members on Ebay! so the same can happen on SD ? but your more likely to be requested to pay for the postage or drop the price to include it so you end up with less by default

Ah but SD members by and large have an FAC or an SGC so at least are "of good character" and on here from day to day or week to week. So they are a "known" quantity. I've no problem at all with a cheque from an SD member or a bank transfer.

But this fellow on eBay asks straight off to pay by cheque claiming he's worried about Paypal phishing. And not purchased anything, or sold anything, at least according to his feedback profile, for OVER one year?

I for one have never known of any Paypal phishing via eBay as the buyer at all times controls the payment process and it is directly through eBay that he receives his invoice. And as we know has "buyer protection".

I think I fall into the "old needy and computer illiterate" category - I will not do telephone banking, I do not have any "apps" and when purchasing on ebay (or similar) I try to use paypal - I will not use "friend and family" but will offer to add the paypal charge to the price. If the seller does not do paypal I offer to send a cheque with plenty of time for them to clear it before expecting him/her to send the goods. So far I have been lucky with only one very crude attempt to scam me. (claimed to have sent me the price of the items I was selling but asked me to pay £300 to them so for the courier which would be refunded when the items were collected)
I live about 4 miles outside town and my banks have all (except Lloyds) moved to the bottom/far end of town and it is very inconvenient (no direct bus service and little, none or very expensive parking) to visit the banks to arrange a bacs or bank transfer. As I have so little knowledge or expertise on computers/electronics and their capabilities I have a fear of the "unknown" especially after watching TV programmes such as "Scam Interceptors" It was much easier before I retired (yes I know -in the olden days) when my secretary dealt with all computer oriented matters
