The BASC register of competent deer stalkers is an initiative which seeks to open up deer management opportunities for BASC members.

Click the link below for more details, and to apply to be added to the register

It looks like there is no charge to be added, however I’m very surprised if that is the case 🤷🏻‍♂️

Could you explain if this is meant to supplant or complement the NatureScot Fit and Competent register?

Minimum DSC2 cause that’s what most landowners require ?? Really ?

Who told the landowners that ? Basc ?
A bit of a back door way of getting more stalkers to do the DSC courses!!, as RA has stated who told the Landowners???. Is this going to be another own goal like the banning of lead for everyone!!

A bit off piste but a similar thing was trialled in Northern Ireland between by a certain shooting organisation and Ulster Farmers Union.
They tried to tie up vermin control by having farmers Union members contact the certain organisation when they had an issue with vermin, then the certain organisation recommended their members in that area.
I'd be worried about certain organisations tying up deer stalking

There’s a slow march of increasing ‘proof of competence’. NatureScot and now BASC getting ready for the day it’s mandated.

Two of my concerns are that competence maintainance is not included, and shooting skills assessment/ maintenance is not included. Both of which are important deer welfare issues not currently addressed. Forestry orgs do quite a bit of good work in that area.

Get on the bus or get out the way of it?

What does the BASC consider to be a competent stalker? I read the article, it doesn't say. Ive never once had any land owner/client ask about qualifications. What they do ask is about safety and experience.
Yep, as I quoted elsewhere, never once been asked for it, they want to know practical stuff not paper exercises, bigger organisations/syndicates and large estates do seem to pay a little more heed to it though

True, of every place I shoot over, never once been asked for any qualification to say I can, they do want to see results though

Exactly how it appears, but I agree, must be something in it for them, been a cynic its nothing for nothing in this world, possibly a fee later down the line IF it takes off, or perhaps a way to boost membership or dsc take up?
Interesting thought process only BASC members are competent 🤔
Can’t recall seeing that in writing anywhere, wait for the Basc badgers to appear because sure as hell its going to happen, fancy a membership only offering something to members, well I never 🤣
Presumably the landowners that contact BASC are such as they mention, The Woodland Trust, rather than farmer Giles from up the hill so I assume that is what is being referred to, and who generally require DSC2.
More than likely, see my response above.

You mean more tied up than it is now, because there is so much stalking going begging currently 🤣🤣🤣
More courses being sold to members who the organization ‘represents’ (bends over) - where was the consultation for this?

Coming soon… conferences ! That’s a real money spinner!

Time for this out of control pseudo quango to die a death…
No one says you have to do the course, it’s not mandatory, yet ! But watch this space 🤣

Its not compulsory in Northern Ireland either, but certain organisations have the PSNI or board and have done their best to keep it elitist for decades, now theres various organisations/individuals running these courses for profit,I wouldn't be guaranteed it has anything to do with deer welfare, won't be long till we have as many stalkers as there are deer.

No, it's a stand alone scheme run by BASC members for BASC members to offer more opportunities for deer stalking. It is early days so let's see how it goes. As regards what is being proposed in Scotland, BASC supports industry-led voluntary training and is opposed to the introduction of mandatory competence testing for any form of shooting.
