Venison to food banks.

Would you be willing to give your venison up if you knew it was going to food banks and kitchens rather than getting next to nothing from a game dealer?
I'm guessing any deer given up that way would have to go through a game dealers doors.

Undoubtedly, provided it could be proven that's where the deer actually went.

I feel this is exactly what should be done with any excess. Like WG i would need to be assured the venison was going to a food bank. My group gave 3 Roes worth of venison to the local church food bank and it was fed to members of that food bank as a Christmas dinner. Sadly it had to be done this way as we still did not have processing facility that would allow us to put on used by date,s.

I believe that the game dealers keep the haunches and loins to "cover their costs", and it's just the shoulders and necks that go in the charity meals.
(Some shoulders and necks will undoubtedly go in the bin due to shot damage, but I bet the game dealer still keeps their share!)

So only the stalkers are actually giving something away. Others involved in the chain are not so charitable.

I’m actually at the point of giving them away with skin on and let people do what they want with them .. only so much my friends and dog can eat . There is a food bank system down here and if they could get somebody involved for the butchering side then I would gladly give them deer but it would probably involve a 300 mile journey to get processed for human consumption

I don’t think it’ll be giving it away, there’ll be a processing fee that you (the supplier) would have to pay to the game dealer etc?
We had a food bank charity contacted us in regards to supplying pheasants to them, which we was happy to do, but the birds had to go to the game dealer(they said what dealer) and we had to pay the £2.75 processing fee per bird. So I’d imagine it’ll be the same for the deer?

That’s the problem , we used to have our own abattoir but the council closed that 20 years ago and now it’s a 300 mile trek and costs .

I cannot speak for the example given in the OP's link as I haven't looked at it, but most certainly one such initiative that I received information about was exactly as I described.

One of the estates I'm involved with donated 18 fallow for a charity dinner with surplus going to the charity for processing into food parcels. What they actually got was 14kg of loin for the dinner and 75kg of mince. From my other post about the yield off a fallow, I reckon they kept about £3500 worth of venison. Needless to say, it won't happen again.

Some charities are providing complete cooked meals for the homeless, using donated game and venison. That's completely different from fresh meat available via a food bank.
I believe that the meals are very well received.
I would support such an initiative wholeheartedly, but not if someone is creaming off the prime cuts for their own profit.

Honestly.....certainly not. Filly expect this opinion to go down like a lead balloon, but....

I think food banks are an outrage. They shouldn't exist at all. There's a welfare state in place, we pay more than a trillion quid a year so that this sort of thing isn't an issue.
Every time there is a "cost of living crisis" the media jumps on this bandwagon claiming people can't afford to eat. It's nonsense. Food is extremely cheap. Farmers produce a lot of good stuff for peanuts and supermarkets and food processors are very efficient at pushing out vast amounts of very cheap food.
What is happening is that people are spending too much on other things and then finding they didn't leave enough to cover their food. If they don't have enough money to cover everything, then let's be honest about it and look at what is too expensive and why, rather than pretend food is a factor.

Unfortunately there are plenty of lazy people taking advantage of food banks, who want everything handed to them on a plate, ready made. If they can afford to be choosy then they shouldn't be there, imo.
However, I was referring specifically to the charities who feed the homeless, who of course don't have the facilities to utilise basic raw ingredients and cook for themselves.

I have friends who I think are on here, they shoot quite a substantial number of fallow. Most if not all go to a homeless charity which they are involved in and are prepped for ready meals for the homeless.
