Venison to food banks.

i think it would call for a more collabrate effort. a shooting org, a catering college and a charity.
game supplied to college for free, students learn butchery, college sell prime cuts in restaurant, teaching students to cook game, college and charity using food banks supply supplementary bits to make ready meals for the homeless/needy.
game is seen as daunting to loads of people. changing that idea will save our sport

Here it is.
Venison producers donate carcasses (2nd paragraph, 1st column).
Game dealers keep the best bits, FOC (last sentence, 2nd column).
Wow, that gets round all the game dealers issues with shoulder shot deer. This isn't charity it's fing robbery. The only one giving anything up is the stalker. I would be more than happy to give up carcasses to charity at todays prices if the processing costs were also donated or heavily subsidised.

Processing isn’t quick or easy in terms of cost ….
Time of person doing it
Skill levels required
And half your time is cleaning the approved area to do it …
That’s a lot for someone to give away for free ..

Remind me what the approximate retail value of two haunches and the entire tenderloin is?

So is the venison mate. I work hard managing deer and if i am giving part of my time free then others can do the same not get the Kudos in our name while steeling all the best cut,s

I’m not defending the fact that game dealer / processor appears to be making / taking proceeds or benefitting from a charitable intended thing or act ….thatd not on !

My point is that to get stuff into food bank takes all I mentioned …. I don’t know any processor that would do that for free.

But I’d expect transparency on what’s expected and being done / used in terms of processing .

Isn't that rather the point of charity? Regardless, don't you think the portion retained might be far more than is necessary to cover costs? I'm by no means a skilled butcher, but I can't see how it could cost them more than £50 a beast. ( I may well be miles off and welcome enlightenment.)

Off a moderate sized fallow?
About £235
I should just add that that represents approximately 2/3 of the value of the carcass, assuming none of the forequarter was lost to shot damage.
Where part of the forequarter is lost then the relative value of the portion retained by the dealer is higher.

I used to sell deer to a local restarante and i asked Pauline how manay meals she would make from the average Roe Deer .Answer around 40 but dont expect more money from me for the deer :tiphat:

You are wasting your time and breath, nobody wants your deer except those who can profit and why not?
Game dealers and butchers have expense ,why should they do their skilled job for free?
There is no such thing in this country as hunger, why do you think they are coming from every corner of the globe to get here!
Provide for your family and friends, the very best of meat, the woke brigade will not thank you for your well intended ideas
Sorry but thats the way it is

One of my fellow stalking mates put me onto a local homeless charity where he donates, so back in November I supplied 6kg of diced haunch, they welcomed it.

All power to your arm mate and i mean that sincerely but when the woke catch on to this they will be demanding all sorts of defra regs ,what i am saying is mind you dont get yourself into trouble, cause they love exposing this type of thing, very right wing you know:(

The problem with this the majority of people using food banks in general(and am not trying to be ****ish) do not want it, it is simply not in a packet or tin. I tried it in covid with our local one. Thats the answer I got from them and it is evident when you go by there still to this day. Fresh fruit veg meat etc all goes to waste. Local butchers, green grocers all donate.
My cousin works for Waitrose... her branch stopped giving all the fresh joints of meat to the food bank they support a few years ago... none of the fresh joints ever got past the folks running the food bank...

I spoke to a local gamekeeper once who told me a sad yet hilarious story. He works on a local estate and they regularly have bird shoots. Nobody wants the birds, and only one guy he knows will take them if they have over 300 to collect.

The estate doesn't want to bin them because it's not a good image so they went to work plucking, butchering and vacuum packing the meat. They took the finished product to the food bank and it was welcomed. When they went back for a second time the food was refused as the food bank users didn't want such "exotic" meat. It was a bit too classy for them seemingly (not my words!).

You couldn't make it up.
