Browning X Bolt Stock Issue

A friend discovered a problem with the stock on his X-Bolt which has a synthetic stock.
The rifle is approximately 10 years old.

For various reasons he hasn't looked at the rifle for several months but a week or so ago he took it out of the cabinet.
When he gripped the rifle he discovered that the synthetic stock had gone soft & sticky, he said it felt like sticky putty.
He also discovered that there had been slight contact at one point between the X-Bolt & the woodwork of an air rifle in the next "slot". The lacquer on the air rifle had been stripped for a large area around the contact point.

Has anyone experienced this phenomenon before?
What caused the deterioration?

I've had a similar problem on the recoil pad of a second hand CZ452 & was told that this was caused by oil on the pad (previous owner of course 🤣). However, I would have expected stocks to be impervious to most chemicals they could be expected to come into contact with.

Thanks,

V

What caused the deterioration?
It's a well known problem with soft feel areas on synthetic stocks and several of the SD have posted solutions to remedy the problem in the past.

I'm just wondering if your friend is in the habit of rubbing down his stock with a rag soaked in oil or cleaning solvent in the mistaken belief that he's somehow protecting his rifle. If he is in the habit of doing so he's more than likely causing the problem as he's doing more harm than good.
