Baited or run-through for stoats

I have it on good authority that there is a new type of spring trap going through the approval process at DEFRA.

It is specially designed for use on stoats and will retail at around £12 each plus £10 for a tunnel.

It is much smaller and lighter than a DOC150 and so many more can be carried out in the field. One person should be able to carry 8 traps and tunnels at a time.

It is designed as a baited trap rather than a run-through. Given that it would cost a fraction of the cost a DOC150 or Tully, is there a market for a baited trap?

There'll always be a market for a cheaper trap , as long as it's as effective as the trap it's replacing. Whether it's only to be used baited or not will have an impact on some but I'm sure if it works baited there's no reason that it won't work as a run through , unless of course the licence states that it must be used baited

when it comes to stoats , many of the best keepers swear by the stop end set - baited ! the only downside if you haven't got lots of rabbits to use for bait

Why's that then?
Europe started the ball rolling and we failed apparently to satisfy that a fenn under all circumstances killed a stoat within 45 seconds as covered by some of their legislation covering ermine/stoats in some state or country.
No concerns if trapping squirls or ratty bar usual checking within time frame, could not write it but foreign type did and we jumped
Yet again😂

The issue with stoats and Fen traps was the stoat was often caught in a none lethal way
Never found a live stoat in any of mine nor timed time to expire if not secured at front end which would be instant or near as matters
But within context of none lethal way and interpretation could well believe some would suffer for more than forty five seconds so ruled out of use on a stoat by whatever gov dept trialled them once Europe perceived a problem.
One big can of worms which got opened and genie out of bottle🤷🏽‍♂️

The ‘problem’ with Fenn traps is they fell foul of European animal welfare laws relating to the fur trade, the UK took on these European rules into our own laws. Fenns did not kill consistently within the required time frame as designated. Stoat would be caught but take time to die. Stoats are the only animal in the UK that are included on these fur trade laws, that’s why Fenns were not banned for rats or squirrels or weasel. I have never found a live stoat in a Fenn but to be honest I have encountered a few live Weasels even when apparently caught correctly.
